What are ions? |
Ions are particles that have a positive or negative charge |
What happens when metals from ions? |
Metals lose electronsnbecoming a positive ion |
What happens when a non-metal forms an ion? |
Non-metals gain electrons and form a negative ion |
If a metal lost 2 of it's electrons what would the charge of it's ion be? |
It will be ion with the charge of 2+ |
Which four groups form ions readily? |
Group 1, 2, 6 and 7 |
What force attracts atoms in ionic bonding |
Electrostatic forces |
What type of bonding happens when a metal and a non-metal bond together? |
Ionic bonding |
Draw sodium chloride as an ionic bond with a dot and cross diagram. |
Ionic compound have a structure called what? |
Giant ionic lattice |
Do ionic compounds have a high or low melting point? |
High melting point |
Can ionic compound conduct electricity when melted or dissolved? |
Yes |
Do ionic compounds dissolve? |
Yes |
Does covalent morning happen between metals or non-metals? |
Non-metals |
What are covalent bonds |
Electrostatic forces between 2 non metals? |
Draw a dot and cross diagram for covalent bonding |
What are simple molecular substances? |
Simple molecular substances are made up of molecules containing few atoms joined together by covalent bond |
Name 3 simple molecular substances |
Hydrogen, chlorine, nitrogen, water, hydrogen chloride, oxygen, methane |
What are the properties of a simple molecular substances? |
Atoms are held together with strong covalent bonds however the forces between molecules are weak.
Melting and boiling points are very low due to the weak intermolecular forces.
Most simple molecular substances are gases or liquids at room temperature.
Bigger molecules have a higher melting and boiling point because of the stronger intermolecular forces. . Molecular compounds can't conduct electricity. |
