What is discrimination |
When people judge each other based on their differences and use their differences to create a disadvantage or a oppression |

What is direct discrimination? Give examples |
Involved intentionally putting someone at a disadvantage or treating them unfairly based on their differences for example a woman who is told that she did not get the job because she is female and is a victim of direct sex discrimination |

What is indirect discrimination? Give examples |
This is when a policy or rules applies to everybody but it has a dentrimental effect on some people. The discrimination is accidental or unintentional for example of a Jon ruled you must be clean shaven this would effect males who are unable to cut their beards due to religious reasons |

What is physical abuse? give examples |
This occurs when someone causes physical pain or hurts a individual. A carer could handle a child roughly when changing a nappy. This could cause physical injuries such as bruising if very roughly handled, broken bones |

What is verbal abuse? Give examples |
This could be name calling, insults, or swearing or trying to humiliate someone or reduce their dignity or security. An example could be a care assistant in a resident home using foul language and raising her voice because the resident is taking to long to finish her meal when the carer wants to go off duty |

What is sexual abuse? |
This would include any type of unwanted sexual contact such as touching breasts , genitals , or buttocks when the victim is dressed or undressed |

What is psychological abuse? |
This is threats and constant criticism are examples of psychological abuse. The aim is to undermine and control the person being abused |

What is neglect |
This is when the carer fails to care for someone properly. Their basic needs for food , clean clothing are not met |

What is prejudice |
It is when someone has a negative attitude towards or unfair dislike of an individual or group of people. Prejudice is based on Ill informed opinion or on inaccurate information. E.g racial prejudices or punishment of people because of their sexual orientation |

What is bullying |
It describes a range of repetitive negative behaviours that can intimidate or harm individuals. Examples include hitting someone, humiliation, harrasment, critism, inappropriate comments , repeating offensive jokes and nicknames. This must be repeated |

What is labelling? |
Identifying people negatively as part of a particular group. The assumption is that 'they are all the same' examples include ' all old people are weak and need to be looked after' some may be frail but some can live independently into their 90s |

What is stereotyping? |
It involved making judgements about individuals or groups based on prejudices. It means making unfair assumptions that people with certain characteristics are the same for example ' girls are better behaved than boys' or 'midwives should be female' |

Who can be affected by discrimination within health and social care environments? |
Discriminatory practice can effect anyone and not just the people who use the services.
For example, hospital practitioners may be subject to discriminatory prejudice from their supervisor or patients families or a child attending a nursery may be discriminated against by nursery Staff or other children or their families |

Disempowerment Low self esteem and low self confidence And poor health and wellbeing |

What is disempowerment? |
individuals who have suffered discrimination can feel disempowered. They can feel lack of control in their life particularly if they are in residential care, where they are dependent on the carer who is abusing them |

Self esteem and confidence can be destroyed by discrimination leading to an individual feeling worthless |

What is poor health and wellbeing |
An individuals wellbeing may be affected; they may become withdrawn and isolated to avoid the situation feeling very frightened about further discrimination and I'll treatment. Health problems can develop such as high blood pressure or anxiety or the individual is already Ill then their condition may deteriorate and delay their recovery .Physical abuse may lead to some serious and in some cases fatal consequences.
