Define photosynthesis.
the fundamental process by which plants make carbohydrates from raw materials using light energy.
What is the point of photosnthesis for the plant?
To make glucose for the plant as it cannot feed on other food. ie it is an autroph.
Explain why a plant needs water.
It is a raw product of photosynthesis.
It supports and cools the plant. It transports mineral ions from the root to the leaf. |
Describe the energy change that takes place during photosynthesis.
Light energy is changed to chemical energy stored in the glucose.
Explain why root hair cells need glucose transprorted to them.
They have no chlorophyll for photosynthesis.
Which ions are needed for photosynthesis?
Magnesium ions are needed to make chloropyhll and nitrate ions are needed to make cells.
Explain why sucrose is transported through the phloem to the root
Starch is not soluable enough because it is to big. Glucose is to osmotically active
Describe the word equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water ----> starch + Oxygen
Describe the intake of carbon dioxide and water by plants
Carbon dioxide diffuses into the leafs spaces from the air. Water is transported from the roots to the leaf by the xylem
Why does the plant immediatly change the glucose it makes to starch?
Glucose is changed straight to sarch as glucose will draw water by osmosis.
Describe an experiment to show that chlorophyl is needed for photosynthesis
Test variegated leaf to the presence of starch. Only the green parts of th eleaf will turn blue black.
What do we mean by a plant that has been destarched?
It is has been kept in the dark so it can not phtosynthesise. All it's glucose has been used by respiration so it contains no starch.
Explain the concept of a limiting factor
In bright light plants are absorbing as much light as possible. If carbon dioxide is increased the rate of photosynthesis will increase.
Describe and experiment to show that light is needed for photosynthesis
Destarch two identical plants. Cover one plant so it can't get light. After two days test the plants for starch.
Describe and experiment to show that carbon dioxide is needed for photosynthesis
Destarch two identical plants. Place each plant in a bell jar add to one bell jar soda lime to absorb the CO2. Test the plant for stach 2 days later
What factors will increase the rate of photosynthesis
1) More light
2) More carbon dioxide 3) More water 4) More chlorophyl |
Define limiting factor
Something present in the environment in such short supply that it restricts life processes
define water potential
water p[otential describes the abiltity of a soultion to pull water toward it. Pure water has the highest water potential of 0.
