Line of Symmetry
|
A line that divides a figure into two reflected parts; sometimes called a line of reflection or axis of symmetry. A figure may have one or more lines of symmetry, or it may have none. It can be vertical, horizontal, or oblique (slanted).

Center of Rotation
|
A point about whcih the rotation of an object or design turns.
|
|
Order of Rotation
|
The number of times a shape or design fits into itself in one complete turn.
|
|
Angle of Rotation
|
The minimum measure of the angle needed to turn a shape or design onto itself. This may be measured in degrees or fractions of a turn. It is equal to 360 degrees, divided by the order of rotation.

Whole Numbers
|
Inclusively whole positive numbers. Whole numbers INCLUDE 0 (W)

Rational Numbers
|
All numbers that can be written as a fraction; they also take the form of a repeating decimal and terminating decimals. These numbers may be EITHER positive or negative. (Q)

Irrational Numbers
|
All numbers with non repeating decimals (Q with bar on top)

Square Roots
|
The divisor (or equal factor) of a perfect square.

Perfect Square
|
The product of two equal rational numbers.

Integers
|
All whole numbers INCLUDING both POSITIVE, NEGATIVE numbers and ZERO. (I)

Power
|
A mathematical expression made up of a base and an exponent.

|
Exponent
|
The number of times you multiply the base by itself in a power.
|
|
Base
|
The number you multiply by itself in a power, located directly below the exponent or everything in brackets.

Exponential Form
|
A shorter way of writing repeated multiplication, using a base and an exponent.

Coefficient
|
A number that multiplies an expression in -3(2) exponent 4, the coefficient is -3.

Exponent Laws
|
Rules used to help simplify an expression with powers.
|

Product of Powers
|
When multiplying powers with the same base, keep the same base and add the exponents. Ex. a exponent n X a exponent m = a exponent n+exponent m.

Quotient of Powers
|
When dividing powers with the same base, keep the same base and subtract the exponents. Ex. (a) exponent n / (a) exponent m = (a) exponent n-exponent m
|

Power of a Product
|
When a product is raised to an exponent, you can rewrite each number in the product with the same exponent. Ex. (ab) exponent n = (a) exponent n X (b) exponent n.

Power of a Quotient
|
When a quotient is raised to an exponent, you can rewrite each number in the quotient with the same exponent. Ex. (a over b) exponent n = (a) exponent n over (b) exponent n

Power of a Power
|
When a power is raised to an exponent, multiply the exponents to find a single exponent and keep the same base. Ex. (a exponent n) exponent m = a exponent n X exponent m.

Zero Exponent
|
When any base except zero is raised to the exponent zero, the answer is 1. Ex. (a) exponent 0 = 1. (a) does not equal 0.

Negative Exponent
|
A negative exponent tells us to reciprocate the base and keep the exponent. Ex. (a) exonent -n = 1 over (a) exponent n.

Enlargement
|
An increase in the dimensions of a 2D or 3D object by a scale factor greater than 1

Reduction
|
A decrease in the dimensions of a 2D or 3D object by a scale factor less than 1.
|
|
Scale Factor
|
The constant factor by which all dimensions of an object are enlarged or reduced in a scale diagram.

|
Scale
|
A comparison between the size of an image and its original, expressed as a ratio, fraction, percent, in words, or in a diagram.

Scale Diagram
|
A drawing that is similar/proportional to the actual figure.

Proportion
|
Two equal ratios. Cross products are always equal in a proportion.

Corresponding Angles
|
Equal angles that have the same relative position in geometric figures.
|
|
Corresponding Sides
|
Lengths that have the same relative position in geometric figures. The ratio of corresponding lengths in similar figures will always be equal.

Similar Figures
|
Have the same shape (equal angles) but may be of different size (different lengths).
|
|
Polygon
|
A 2D closed figure made of three or more line segments.
