What are metaarterioles? |
Terminal arterioles, which donot have a muscular continuous coat but smooth muscle fibres encircle it at various points |
|
What is a precapillary sphincter? |
At the point where a true capillary originated from a metaarteriole, smooth muscle fibres encircle it and close or open the capillary. This is called the precapillary sphincter . |
|
What are intercellular clefts? |
Pores in the capillaries. For transport of water, water soluble ions and small solutes. |

|
What are caveolae ? |
Also called plasmalemmal vesicles . Seen in capillaries. They may help in endocytosis and transcytosis of macromolecules. |

What are the special type of pores of capillaries in other organs? |
1. Brain - tight junctions that allow water , oxygen, carbon dioxide only. 2. Liver - wide open clefts allow plasma proteins , and all dissolved substances to pass through 3. GIT - pores are midway in size between the muscles and the liver 4. Kidney - glomerular filters have fenestrae that intrude deep into the capillaries and allow molecules and ionic substances to pass through them without plasma proteins |
