What are the key differences between: Line Flow, Flexible Flow, and Hybrid Systems? |
Line flow: Producing end items/services with relatively high demand, require very little customization. Linear path: -start at one end and go to last center. -Each work center does the same exact work to every unit that passes through. -Not necessary flow layout in straight line. Can be S/U to access most work stations Two primary: -Assembly line (can stop at any moment and won't spoil). Cars, digital devices. -Continuous flow systems (must run to completion). Food. |
What are the key differences between: Line Flow, Flexible Flow, and Hybrid Systems? |
Flexible flow: Producing end items/services with relatively low demand levels, requires a lot of customization. Each work center has specialized single function. Still with large degree of variation within each. -Painting: different colors -Drill -Sand -Weld -Assembly Can help lots of different customers same day/time. Can use to help decide whether or not there's better layouts. Mess. |
What are the key differences between: Line Flow, Flexible Flow, and Hybrid Systems? |
Combine elements both line flow and flexible flow layouts. Linear layout, each station customizable Depends on if items need high/low customization. -Low: line flow system, 1-2 areas customizable -High: most customizable with 1-2 areas line flow |
What is cycle time? |
Pace at which product must move through assembly line in order for assembly line to keep pace with demand |
What does cycle time (c) dictate? |
Maximum amount of task time put into 1 workstation. Whether or not can combine tasks into a workstation and if go over (c)/allowed time. |
How does (c) relate to capacity? |
Effective cycle time. Can move the pace of entire assembly line to bottleneck time WS3 = 50 seconds instead of 54. Increase pace, maximize capacity and produce more units
What is a bottleneck and how does it relate to capacity? |
Largest workstation is your slowest workstation. Weakest link. Limits entire assembly line's output. Inefficient use of capacity: use way too many resources (time) for one. WS3 = 50 seconds |

Define: Established channels of distribution |
Channels of distribution = chain of organizations, help get product to end users: packaging, delivery companies, warehouses, distribution centers, suppliers Established channels of distribution = chain of organizations with history of working together and coordinating Transactions regular and fluid Big advantage. Know downstream SC partners are reliable. Or just move somewhere with established industry channels of distribution. |
Define: established supplier base |
Supplier base = collection of companies buy products/services from Established supplier base = group of companies that have working relationship Transactions regular and fluid. Upstream supply chain partners comfortable and familiar. Move some place with industry suppliers. |
