What is traits?
The word that describes the physical differences that make organisms unique is traits.
What does DNA stand for?
DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid.
How is DNA divided?
DNA is divided into sections called genes; different genes control different traits of an organism.
What does DNA do?
DNA is the molecule that makes up chromosomes, directs cell's activities, and determines all of an organism's traits.
Do all the cells of your body contain the same DNA?
All of your body cells
contain the same DNA - your tongue cells, liver cells, bone cells, skin cells and so on. |
Why do different body parts look different even though they contain the same DNA?
The reason different body parts look different, even though they contain the same DNA is because different genes are exerting control over your cell's activities and structures.
What does DNA look like?
DNA looks like a long twisted ladder, called the double helix.
What are the bases and what do they attach to?
The bases are A, T, C and G. A can only attach to T (AT) and C can only attach to G (CG).
What is the 'ladder" made up of?
The "ladder" is made up of smaller molecules called bases.
What do base pairs form?
These base pairs form rungs of the DNA ladder and groups of DNA pairs make up genes.
How many genes make up a chromosome?
Tens of thousands of genes make up each human chromosome.
How many chromosomes do humans have?
Humans have 46 chromosomes.
