A wide variety of activities including lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling and carrying. |

Before we manually handle anything what should we take into account? |
Strength & capability of individual Type & weight of load Environmental conditions If the person has had adequate training How the work is organised - can it be reorganised to minimise handling or reduce risk? |

When lifting by hand ( not by hoist or machine) what should we remember? |
Avoidance of twisting, stooping & reaching Try not to lift from floor level or above shoulder height- particularly if a heavy load Arrange storage areas to minimise need to carry/ lift Minimise carrying distances Assess if load too heavy- can it be broken down into smaller components? |
