In ‘Apache Junction high school’ they are only required to go to school four days a week. This four day week is better for the teachers because it gives them a day off instead of making them plan lessons on their weekend. Michael Griffith of ECS commented on the Duval school district’s schedule saying, “ moving to a four day week produced only a 0.7% savings, yet that resulted in a budget reduction of $7 million (Long). This quote shows that the school saves a lot of money on four day schedules so that they can spend more money on other important things like their staff. This could have the potential to keep many teachers employed.

Some people may say that a five day schedule is better for the kids because it keeps them out of trouble and gives them something to do; however, this is not a valid argument. According to a study done by Mike Weaver for the Apache Junction school board, the staff and students are very favorable towards the four day week. Parents are a little less supportive, but the amount of parents that favor it are still over 50% (Long). This quote shows that a four day weekend is more favorable than a five day week with the general population including parents and teachers.

In conclusion a five day school week is not as good as a four day week. All schools need to switch to a four day week because teachers have more time to plan lessons, kids are more attentive, and school districts save more

The first academic journal I studied found that with the transition to a four-day school week, students scored in proficient or advanced level on math and reading achievement tests. This enhances the idea that switching to four-day week does not hinder a students performance and may in fact boost it. Both of the journals I read brought up many positives and a few negatives to implementing the four day week. Some of the positives they found were cost savings in utilities, transportation and food costs in addition to an increase in student and teacher attendance.…

If we were to ask today’s school kids what they would prefer I would guarantee they would agree with keeping today’s school schedule the same as it is. The very thought of sending children to school year-round makes some parents cringe. They dislike the idea of children attending schools with no summer break. They question the value of a continuous school year interspersed with many breaks. While the schedule is definitely not what the majority of parents grew up with, it’s not nearly as onerous as some people think.…

The traditional 40 hour, 5 day work schedule should be changed to a 4 day 32 hour week. The current 5 day work schedule is very demanding to those with families or that are in school. Typically the current work schedule leaves little to no time for physical and mental recuperation. Furthermore this in turn leads to employee burnouts and a decline in productivity. Switching from a 40 hour to 32 hour work schedule is the easiest way to remedy some of these issue.…

Paul van Hippel, sociologist, did a study in 2007 that shows essentially no difference in the knowledge of students in both a traditional nine month school calendar and the same number of days in a year-round format (Smyth). “It wouldn’t benefit students more.” said Mr. Dodson. I do not agree with the idea of adding more hours to school days. If they do anything they should shorten school days. It is not fair that kids have to go to school any longer than what they do already. I feel that it is torture because if they do not go to school then kids can get in very big trouble even their parents can get in trouble. I do not think that it is a very good idea to have longer school days.…

According to the article, "Focus on the School Calendar: The Four-Day School Week" states "State Departments of Education staff says that students do no worse than students on a traditional calendar" which proves that students who have a shorter school week do about the same as students with a longer week (Gaines). The over all results of having a four day week or a five day week are not really any different. In the article, "Top 7 Pros And Cons Of 4 Day School Weeks" research says "attendance of students enrolled in schools that have a four day week shows that attendance is improved as a result" which proves that students come to school most days because they are already getting an extra day to relax and do what they want over the weekend ("Top 7"). Most students do not want to miss school because of the make up work they would have to do from a longer school day. Some students enjoy learning and a longer school day would be beneficial to them overall.…

“Schools that operate on a four-day schedule typically shorten the school week by eliminating either Monday or Friday and add more time to each day to provide the same number of instructional hours as a traditional five-day week” (“Four-Day School Week–Evidence Blast,” 2013, par. 2). My first thought on a four-day school week is that it cannot happen in urban areas as most families are dual income and so parents are unable to take off one day per week to care for their children. For one Minnesota school district, it was estimated that a four-day school week would cost families an extra $600 per year in childcare expenses (“Four-Day School Week–Evidence Blast,” 2013). Having a four-day school week makes me fear for those children who would…

Finding new ways to persuade students to be present to class is vital for the administration. Eliminating one day per week could be enough to motivate the students to attend class more frequently. As a consequence to this solution, the attendance policy would be more strict, fewer days would be allowed to miss, and classes would be longer. Every class Monday-Thursday would be an hour and thirty minutes long, instead of having fifty minute classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and an hour and a half classes on Tuesday and Thursday. Nevertheless, with a four-day school week, students would be able to fit more activities in on their three day break for friends and family, relaxation, and job responsibilities.…
