My family and I rushed to the hospital where I had several scans and tests performed, only to have the doctors ruled out anything “life-threatening”. However, upon being discharged, I fainted in the hallway. I was readmitted immediately, given an IV, and transferred to University of South Alabama Women and Children's Hospital in Mobile, Alabama I was kept three for three days and two nights in the Pediatric ICU. I was discharged with the diagnosis of ventricular ectopy. Although this was discovered, the doctors had no explanation for the cause of the extreme chest pains, nausea, or fainting because ventricular ectopy is a relatively painless condition. I was sixteen years old.

This experience made me think about how I was spending my time and my future. I was surrounded by a family who encouraged growth and excellence in everything I did. The strive for excellence has influenced my view of my future and personal goals. This excellence has shown itself in my academic achievements and for the goals I have set for myself. I have learned humility through the community

From a young age, I witnessed how nurses cared for people, how they showed compassion, and how they provide reassurance during moments of chaos and fear. When my uncle was diagnosed with cancer, it was the nurse that comforted my family during moments of despair, it was the nurse who educated us and answered our numerous questions, and it was the nurse who was the first to respond and care for my uncle till his last few moments. Throughout nursing school my philosophy became to be like the nurses who cared for my uncle, to create a long-lasting impact on my patient’s life and to make a difference for my patients. I quickly realized that to make a difference, to provide adequate care for my patients, and to be the best nurse possible, not only must I provide physical care for the patient, but I also have to address all dimensions of wellness for my patient’s, their family, and myself. As I seek a position as a pediatric staff nurse, I understand the importance of caring for the patient, the patient’s family, and myself.…
