Advantages
Throughout my life I have experienced many advantages that have helped shape me into the person I am today. These advantages include concerted cultivation, practice, and my personal class advantage. All of these things have made the life I live today possible. I am a product of concerted cultivation. Concerted cultivation is a concept that is presented and explained in Gladwells book Outliers. Gladwell explains that concerted cultivation is a parenting style where the parent is actively involved in their child’s life no matter what they are doing. Malcolm Gladwells book Outliers describes class advantage influences that individual’s ability to become successful. My family has always been well off and we could always afford to do things that other people might not be able to do. My family has provided for all the things that I have ever need for school or any activities I participated in outside of school. My family’s class has also affected the type of friends I have. My true friends, the people I hang out with, are intelligent and mature young adults which directly correspond with the characteristics I want myself to have. My social class will also help me decide on the job profession that I will go into. This one decision will most likely be the most important decision I will make in my career. I was already aware of many of the things that were mentioned in the book because of my love for knowledge. If I don’t know something I will look it up and my Dad and I often will entertain ourselves by having thought provoking conversations pertaining to my future so that we can understand were each of us stand on the topic. However, I feel as if this book was a fantastic read and if I knew what the book was about I would read it for fun so that I can discuss these things with other people. I see myself as a very rational thinker and take things for what they are. I love having philosophical discussions with other people who are of the same “mindset” because to me discussing things with other people is very fun to do (I can’t really explain it in words how exciting it is to discuss with other people philosophical topics). I feel like this book is an exceptional conversational piece and allows other people to understand all the things that go into making someone or something successful. The book does explain some very interesting concepts
