Part One: Synopsis
On January 1976, Cupcake (Lavette) Brown was awoken by her mother’s loud music. It was Elton John singing. She was wondering why her mother hadn’t woken her up that morning. She later finds out that her mother has died from an epileptic seizure. Cupcake and her brother Larry stay with their mother’s ex boyfriend who they call “Daddy” and his girlfriend Lori. They then have to go to court about who gets custody of the children. Their biological father shows up because he just wants them so he can have their funds. He won custody over them and took them to a lady named Diane who owns a foster home in Lancaster. There, Cupcake and Larry were treated horribly and she was even raped

While reading the story, every single chapter has so much imagery. You can actually view in your mind what things look like for instance setting, character, time period, all of that. In my opinion Cupcake Brown is a lot different from other writers. I’ve never read a book where there is so much description that when you close your eyes you can see everything and that is how it is different and better. For example, in the book it gives a lot of detail how when she woke up behind the dumpster what happened to her and also her clothes. You could also imagine the setting and what she may have looked like after being abused. This book also uses continuous irony. In the book Cupcake would always run away and while she ran away she always talked about how she would return back to Lancaster. Well that’s what happened every time she ran away; hitch hiked, camped out in parks and turned tricks. It is more complex to me than in other stories because it gives you more than just the irony and it also makes the message make sense. It makes you understand why she kept running away and then returning because of the circumstances that she was in having to deal with a foster mother and foster kids that didn’t really show her that much love and care about her. To add in a extra technique, there was also symbolism toward the middle of the book wen she joined the gang called the Crips. This had to do with symbolism …show more content…
McCarthy should definitely read this great book. It is interesting and it makes you never want to put the book down because the detail and the story line of it is just unreal. It’s an amazingly great book and Cupcake Brown did an excellent job on writing it. It gives every detail about her life from age eleven and on. The book does have a ton of explicit stories but it also makes you want to keep reading to find out what’s going to happen next. You should pick up the book next time you’re at the bookstore because no only is it colorful, it is just over all great. Another reason why you should pick up this book is because you can see what life was like from Cupcake Brown’s point of view. This book could teach many lessons. It can teach how to handle certain events and it could also relate to someone that had to experience a bad foster home. The book has a great theme of “you handle whatever gets thrown at you in life.” That’s exactly what Cupcake did. I guarantee Mrs. McCarthy would love this book if she picked it up and read it. It talks about her life in the gang, which is quite interesting, and it talks mainly about how she went from the streets and back to Lancaster at Diane’s all over again. It may make you emotional but overall it is truly something to grab and read. In the end of the book the author gets help and graduates which is a great overcome because she never thought she was going to get out of the lifestyle she was

In the passage “What Has Happened Here” Elsa Barkley Brown believes that women’s history should be inclusive of gender, race, and culture as these have important significance in shaping outcomes and society perspective. She talks about how historians like to “isolate one conversation” (297) to explore them to tailor its dialogue to fit different narratives. This however in turn loses significant facts that should not be left out when shaping the details. Barkley is adamant about the importance of Anita Hill’s race in the testimony of the sexual harassment case. Thinking that in order to make the public more sympathetic and keep the case simplified they should focus strictly on the sexual harassment of a women by a man.…

    Brown And Schafft Summary

    - “Hating the shit out of the next town over” to me would apply to Brown and Schaffts internal structure v. external relationships. In my opinion the authors would view this as a strong relationship as it relates to “hate” of an outside town due to how urbanism has made it difficult for the local economy to survive if per se, a Walmart comes within 50 miles or so and is perhaps this cheaper alternative to local, farm grown/raised products—so I think here the hate could be from an economic standpoint from farmers and farm families. Another form of this hate that Brown and Schafft would agree could happen is a result of political inequalities. An example of this would be the next town over having more of a voice in the legislative process…

    Peter's Lullaby Analysis

"Peter's Lullaby: A song without words that held a little girl's life" is the most painful and horrific story I have ever read. It is a real story in which Jeanne Fowler narrates how growing up with an abusive and alcoholic mother was like. It was child abuse beyond the imaginable. Unlike other children whose lullaby are usually soothing, Fowler's lullaby was her young brother's screams of pain as he stood beaten. She begins her story by describing how the police rescued her siblings and her from unbearable torture during her few moments of being hung in her closet.…

In “The Landlady”, Billy Weaver is lured into a seemingly normal bed and breakfast by an old lady who, despite her gentle and unthreatening appearance, wants to kill him. It is a story about how those with cruel intent may take advantage of those who are innocent and naive. Although the book and the movie can be arguably similar if generalized, there are many differences that may change the way a reader/viewer may grasp the concept of the story. Since a movie and book cannot be exactly the same, the film version is bound to have things that differ from the text. One example of how the book develops the development of the story is with the setting.…
