Part One: Synopsis
On January 1976, Cupcake (Lavette) Brown was awoken by her mother’s loud music. It was Elton John singing. She was wondering why her mother hadn’t woken her up that morning. She later finds out that her mother has died from an epileptic seizure. Cupcake and her brother Larry stay with their mother’s ex boyfriend who they call “Daddy” and his girlfriend Lori. They then have to go to court about who gets custody of the children. Their biological father shows up because he just wants them so he can have their funds. While reading the story, every single chapter has so much imagery. You can actually view in your mind what things look like for instance setting, character, time period, all of that. In my opinion Cupcake Brown is a lot different from other writers. I’ve never read a book where there is so much description that when you close your eyes you can see everything and that is how it is different and better. For example, in the book it gives a lot of detail how when she woke up behind the dumpster what happened to her and also her clothes. You could also imagine the setting and what she may have looked like after being abused. This book also uses continuous irony. In the book Cupcake would always run away and while she ran away she always talked about how she would return back to Lancaster. Well that’s what happened every time she ran away; hitch hiked, camped out in parks and turned tricks. It is more complex to me than in other stories because it gives you more than just the irony and it also makes the message make sense. It makes you understand why she kept running away and then returning because of the circumstances that she was in having to deal with a foster mother and foster kids that didn’t really show her that much love and care about her. McCarthy should definitely read this great book. It is interesting and it makes you never want to put the book down because the detail and the story line of it is just unreal. It’s an amazingly great book and Cupcake Brown did an excellent job on writing it. It gives every detail about her life from age eleven and on. The book does have a ton of explicit stories but it also makes you want to keep reading to find out what’s going to happen next. You should pick up the book next time you’re at the bookstore because no only is it colorful, it is just over all great. Another reason why you should pick up this book is because you can see what life was like from Cupcake Brown’s point of view. This book could teach many lessons. It can teach how to handle certain events and it could also relate to someone that had to experience a bad foster home. The book has a great theme of “you handle whatever gets thrown at you in life.” That’s exactly what Cupcake did. I guarantee Mrs. McCarthy would love this book if she picked it up and read it. It talks about her life in the gang, which is quite interesting, and it talks mainly about how she went from the streets and back to Lancaster at Diane’s all over again. It may make you emotional but overall it is truly something to grab and read. In the end of the book the author gets help and graduates which is a great overcome because she never thought she was going to get out of the lifestyle she was
