“About 80 million Americans, representing 50 percent of U.S. homes, own 223 million guns.” (Bitto & Juliano) According to this statistic over a quarter of the U.S. population owns a gun of some kind. If the guns were all taken away that is a quarter of the population of the U.S. that would be angry at the government. That is a quarter of the population that will try to defend their 2nd amendment right to bear arms. can’t go around blaming all of our problems on guns. The gun isn’t the one that is making the choice to hurt someone. If someone really feels such a compelling urge to hurt someone they will do it regardless of whether they use a gun or a knife or something worse. But as LaPierre of the N.R.A. said, “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” (Smith) If the people that are getting hurt didn’t have a way to defend themselves from the bad guy with a weapon then worse things will happen. For example at a community college in Oregon 9 people were killed and 20 were injured due to a mass shooter. These deaths could have been prevented if someone there had had a gun, but because no one there had a gun the shooter had free control over everyone and took the lives of 9 innocent college students and possibly ruined 20
