Comparison Is Like Human Nature

Improved Essays
I believe comparison is like human nature because we as humans like to compete against each other and conform in order to "fit in" and at the same time be better than everyone else. I would compare my level of English and reading comprehension skills to others' because Chinese is my "first language." Though I learned English at the same time as Chinese, Chinese was the most dominant language spoken. And because of that, I have to work twice as hard and it will take me twice as longer to write papers. I know that I shouldn't compare myself to others because "letting go of comparison is not a to do list item" (Brown 97) that can be checked off easily. I sort of started this plan already, but it is accepting the fact that I have to work harder than others because of this obstacle. Though it makes me a little different and …show more content…
No matter how content or peaceful I am before our conversation, at the end, I'm at the other end of the spectrum, irritated, mad, and frustrated, and that's due to her tone of voice and her personality (I have a handful people who agrees with me). I started this plan some time ago since I didn't want "talking loudly" to become a very bad habit when I have kids. My plan is to stop, close my eyes, and take slow deep breaths to calm my nerves and relax, and then continue the conversation again. If I'm upset to the point where I may need to throw something, I will wait until our conversation is over and then I'll go outside if it's warm out to become "emotionally clutter free" (Brown 110) or I would tell her, "hold on" and I'll mute her until I calmed down a bit. Brown says, "Overcoming self-doubt is all about believe we're enough and letting go of what the world says we're supposed to be…" (115) I think and sometimes I believe that the only reason I went into nursing is because of what I overheard my mom mention a long time

In the article “The Comparison Trap” by Rebecca Webber she makes some very good point on the subject at hand comparing being negative and positive just depending on the aspect you take on whatever you're comparing yourself to. A point I would like to make for a point she could have touched on as well, being the aspect of the comfort zone. To look more on positive reaction you can usually find it by just simple stepping out of that comfort zone by doing something maybe you never did before or learning something new. We as human often get jealous or compare because we simply are not enjoying our lives even if we feel we have a more than comfortable life. Often comfortable can equal to doing the similar things all the time and never growing or…

Opposites Attract Men and women have very different styles when it comes to the art of communication. In Deborah Tannen’s essay, “But What Do You Mean?” , she describes the different communication variations between men and women. My communication style conforms very accurately to the male gender as described by Tannen because I communicate very directly, give critiques, and like to joke around.…

In addition, I will try to be on a structured diet in order to get on shape. EXERCISE BARRIERS Time and travel are my two main exercise barriers. If only one can buy time, as they say Tuesdays and Thursdays are really rough due to class session that ends at 10, which gives me around 5 hours to workout and stick to my diet. It might be challenging but I feel I am very dedicated and able to sacrifice other parts of my daily life to reach my goal.…

Do you compare yourself to others? I know I do. I measure myself to my friends on how they look, act, and how popular they are. I think about how beautiful they look, how they act with confidence, and how everyone likes them. All of this makes me feel terrible about myself.…

In many societies, there are groups of people who do not wish to conform or are actively against the views of the time. Mark Twain’s The Damned Human Race and Henry David Thoreau’s Civil Disobedience are examples of writings which focus on what they each see wrong with society. They each express their own beliefs which makes each one different. By comparing the opinions of the two authors, we see similarities and differences.…

Please wait for me to catch up to reality. Trust me, I’m trying, but when life moves as fast as it does, it becomes too late and I miss out on yet again another possibility. Please wait for me to think of a half-hearted excuse as to why I can't go out tonight because telling someone that I want to lay in bed and stare at the ceiling isn’t the best excuse. Please bear with me.…

The U.K. is only one away from being on the linear-active section of Lewis’ (Culture Active, n.d.) model of cultures. After reviewing the typical characteristics (both core values and beliefs, as well as social and business behaviors), I agree one hundred percent with the assessment. I am a planner, respect the law, facts and institutions, and part of me needs a good time-line to feel like everything is in order – not just in business, but in my personal life too – so the core values and beliefs feel very apt. My own communication patterns resonate with the Lewis model description, especially being polite but direct, and hardly ever interrupting.…

We believe our communication ethics position (assuming that we have understood this concept and chapter, though we acknowledge that we may not) is in coordination. Distancing ourselves slightly from choosing a particular author that matches our style the most, our highest understanding of the text was in the discussion of dialogical coordination. Arnett et al. speak of this and generally all point to the paradox that “respect[ing] communication that is not dialogic is the beginning of dialogic ethics” (90). Therefore, setting the parameters and being sensitive to those parameters of a dialogical conversation is important, and strikes us personally as second most if not the most important thing to one’s ethical position can achieve.…

Bitch Media started off as Bitch magazine, a feminist zine first published in January 1996 by Lisa Jervis, Benjamin Shaykin, and Andi Zeisler. Since 1996, the non-profit multimedia organization has expanded to include an online presence that analyzes politics, mainstream media, and pop culture through a feminist lens, offering a podcast and articles posted daily. The physical magazine also continues to be printed quarterly. In an article posted September 27, 2016, writer Sarah Mirk points out the inequality of time each candidate spent speaking in the presidential debate the night prior – the Republican candidate, Donald Trump is “running for the title of Mansplainer in Chief,” (2016, para. 1) consistently interrupting and talking over Democratic…

Growing up, I frequently heard variations of the phrase, “If you like what you do, you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” When I was younger, I never fully understood what this meant. As a little kid, everything was attainable and the concept of hard work was nonexistent. However, as a young adult, I am realizing that the small sacrifices I make now will allow me to fulfill my future ambitions. I’ve always been hardworking and restless, both in school and in my extracurricular activities.…

When I came to the United States, I was educated and spoke English. It was British English; the pronunciation, spellings of some words and some of the grammar were completely different. When I enrolled in middle school, everybody made fun of me; all the students thought I was not smart because I could not communicate with them in American English. However, it was not just hard to communicate with other men, but it was also hard to communicate with women because I am a man. I believe that there is a difference in how individuals communicate; it all depends on a person’s gender and the language he or she grew up speaking.…
