I have been an assistant varsity track coach at Capac High School for the past two seasons, and a third upcoming, with my focus in distance events. Also, for the past two summers I have put together the

Ray Bradbury’s “The Sound of Summer Running” and Sandra Cisneros’s “Eleven” both have a charter that puts on something for the first time and include many descriptive emotions. Cross country’s history is unique and interesting because of how it was created and how some of these traditions are still being used today. Cross country was invented in the nineteenth century, which is the same as a game that was played called “hare and hounds”. There are a couple of concepts that they kept the same from the game “Hare and Hounds” to cross country. For example, they still call the person who is leading the race “The Bunny” or “Hare”. In 1837 English schools started having formal cross country meets.…

Bang, the gun sounds. I sprint out of my box, following teammates in pursuit of the leader. The pack of cross country runners appears to envelop me from my parent’s sight. I hurdle toward the first flag, passing competitors right and left. All the rest is a blur, just the pounding of my heart and the thumping of feet as I run, breathing heavier and heavier, twisting and turning through the trails to reach the chute.…

I agree with you. Previously living in Phoenix, this was something I saw happen with the local high school cross country team each year when they would start training for the next school year during the hot Phoenix summer. I ended the season 35 pounds lighter, 14 minutes faster, and for the first time so proud of my accomplishments that the sting of the auditorium experience almost faded. Mr. Pinkerton said by mid-October he saw my face for the first time because I always looked down. I was motivated to succeed because the words of a bully stung so deeply in my sole.…
