I pointed to the stage and said, “I want to do that.” I was a toddler and I found my passion. From that moment all the way to my freshman year of college, I thrived on the dedication and joy that ballet brought to my life. Spending my dance career from age three to nineteen studying ballet, I decided to expand my dance training.

I refused to let others down based on my desire to be apart of dance team. Fighting tears, I thanked the coaches and athletic department staff for the opportunity, but I respectfully declined because when I commit, I never back out.
That decision came so easily to me despite all the hard work I poured into tryouts for the team one last time. However, when I made my sorority sisters my priority; they kept my dream of being on dance team a priority of theirs. With their help and the help of my advisor and others, the commitment that prevented my ability to at practices for dance team was re-arranged. After speaking with the coach, she invited me to an invitation only fall tryout. I accepted the invitation two days before the tryout because it took two months of meetings and pleading to re-arrange my commitment. I made the team and became captain because of my dedication to my team.

To be apart of the All Iowa Honor Dance Team is the greatest honor any high school dance team member in the state of Iowa can receive. The honor team is created of 250 girls that outshined the other 500 that auditioned for a spot on the floor. Nothing is more nerve racking than only being allowed two minutes to prove to a panel of judges, without a retry. It’s not a basketball game where a time out can be called and one can try the play again, and if the play fails and the game is lost, another game is right around the corner to try again. Something that is a bit comical is, I am now much more committed to dance than she was. She only participated on a competitive team for a few years and she must have figured out dance was not something she was really interested in pursuing long-term. Looking back on it now, although my first dance competition was a very important time in my life, it was quite a silly reason to get so nervous. Dance has always been something I am passionate about, but as a little kid, it should have just been something I did for fun; I should not have put so much pressure on myself. Although, in a way, it is good that I have always gotten nervous, because that means that I care about doing…
