Describe The Ways You Develop Your Study Skills

We are required to learn new skills and refine our existing skills almost every day. One important skill when it comes to education is the practice of studying for course work. For myself, I still struggle with this important skill and always seeking new habits and methods to sharpen my studying skills. A huge understanding and realization for myself to help me understand and retain information has to do with how I first take the information in. A good way for myself to really grasp the concept of transferring simple sounds or images into meaningful words, this is known as semantically encoding information. (Nevid, 2015) Some of the most useful and helpful study skills I default to when preparing for a test are creating my practice exams, prioritizes information on a given study guide, make my own study guide, and if there is vocabulary or terms I create flashcards. All of these study habits have helped me immensely in the past, especially creating my own study guides. I am a visual learner so by creating my own study guide helps me visualize questions and answers to the material needed to be studied. If I were to help incoming freshmen with some information I would give them the best advice to learn to control your stress. Although, some stress is good because it helps you stay active and alert but too much can “interfere with the transfer of new learning into long-term memory” (Nevid, 2015). One thing to help manage stress is to prioritize and organize anything and everything to help manage your time and resources. Another very important tip would to keep practicing and do not be discouraged with non-satisfactory work.
