Her parents would not allow her or any of her siblings to bring home someone to date of the same sex. In her eyes God created man and woman to be together, not man and man or woman and woman. This writer’s views are different on sexual orientation because people within the author’s family are homosexual. The book Diversity, Oppression, and Changes says “Nonetheless, there are signs of growing acceptance and increased understanding of same sex attraction and bisexuality in many societies, including the United States” (Kulis, Marsiglia p. 225). This quote is important to recognize because even though our beliefs may be different society has started to look a different way other then the bible which is what Alondra believes in. Alondra’s family views on race and ethnicity are very similar to the way this writer was raised, we both believe that we are all humans and no matter the race, ethnicity or socioeconomic status. It is interesting to hear that someone of a different ethnicity who is a part of the inferior group feels that even though whites are superior that we are all the same. This author believes that Alondra has grown through her adversity and its made her a better person in the end. She is a strong believer in Christ and will always have Him in her corner if racism continues. Although Alondra is not segregated because of her religion she is segregated by her ethnicity. Within Diversity, Oppression, and Change it says “Minority ethnic groups are differentiated from the dominant group through cultural differences based on their language, religion, attitudes toward marriage and parenting, dress, and foods” (Kulis, Marsiglia p.15). This quote stood out to this writer because Alondra is usually made fun of because she speaks a different language within her household. Even though Spanish has become such a big influence in America, people still find it disrespectful when you cannot speak English. Alondra is offended by this because her parents speak very little English, they understand what is being said, but would prefer to speak the language that has been spoken their whole life. This is upsetting because a lot of videos and commercials portray this, but it does happen in real
