Donald Trump Satire

In literature, satire is a genre used to ridicule individuals, an organization or society with the intent to convey a message. It exposes the harsh reality of the world through the use of humor, irony and sarcasm. In the words of Carl Hiaasen “Good satire comes from anger. It comes from a sense of injustice, that there are wrongs in the world that need to be fixed” and this is the exact motive of editorial cartoons. Editorial cartoons are a visual form of satire used in order to illustrate opinions on current affairs and social issues, one such issue being the powerlessness that people of colour are currently facing in America. One candidate in particular has been getting a lot of attention for his scandalously outrageous comments and that is Donald Trump. Donald Trump is a well-known entrepreneur and television personality who is no stranger to power, fame and media attention. He has recently been quite famous due to his rude and racist comments regarding the Latino American community. The cartoon of Donald Trump shows his head drawn in the shape of a pile of feces, with actual quotations said by him, written around him. His head being drawn in that shape symbolizes how everything he says is disgusting or what the cartoonist is literally trying to convey: “crap”. It is also imagery as it allows one to visualize feces and make on feel sickened or revolted. Additionally, the cartoonist uses flies to also create an image of a pile of feces but also as a symbol. The flies are seen wearing the infamous white hats worn and is an allusion to the Ku Klux Klan, a movement of white supremacists. In the same way flies are drawn to feces, white supremacists and neo-Nazis are drawn to Donald Trump’s ideologies. The symbolism behind the flies shows how these followers of Trump are similar to pests in society because they are a nuisance. They are an annoyance and they cause trouble to people of colour. The cartoonist also integrated actual quotations said by Trump to use facts that support his message that Donald Trump is a racist. The use of quotations such as “Deport ‘em all” and “Disease carrying immigrant” are to present to those analyzing the cartoon that Donald Trump discriminates against the Latino community and that if he is elected, their community suffer. It is evident that Donald Trump’s plans of to “Make America Great Again” include oppressing Latino Americans and electing him as a leader could possibly mean the misfortunes of
