The government has recently amended the school leaving age to 18 to encourage continued education and to reduce the unemployment rates. Pupils are able to leave school at 16 if they have a work based learning position to go to. This is normally by way of an apprenticeship with a company. By doing this the individual will benefit from on the job experience along with structured training normally at a college or institution. Other pupils may decide to stay on at school and move into the sixth form. This is an institution whereby they can continue with their studies in order to gain more qualifications (normally A levels) to enable them to apply for places at universities.
