An important part of the planning of training is making sure that you are training your unit with a purpose and a goal to become proficient in a METL task. When training to become proficient in a METL task, there are important steps in the development and training process, and these principles are called the principles of unit training. As a unit commander you must first realize that you are the one responsible for making sure that the training happens, but this doesn’t mean that you always have to be the one leading the trainings. You can leave this up to your NCO’s and leaders. What you do have to do as a commander is ensure that they are training to the standard given and also training how they will fight. This is important because when you train with the intensity needed in combat, you will automatically revert to that intensity when the time comes in battle. Also, ensuring that your unit focuses on training the fundamentals first is crucial, because the crawl, walk, run theory makes sure that all Soldiers learn each step in the process correctly before progressing to the next step. When planning the training that are weeks out, ensure that there is ample time to retrain in the future rather than checking the box once and thinking that your Soldiers will remember that forever. Training to sustain and maintain is required of your Soldiers especially because you have to always remember that you will always have Soldiers joining and leaving your unit which affects your readiness level. Another principle to focus on is training adaptable leaders in your unit. This means that when conducting training, make the conditions tough and ever changing so that the leaders in your unit have to always be thinking on their feet.
