Felix Mendelssohn was born on 3 February 1809, in Hamburg Germany. He was the grandson of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. Felix was born into a prominent Jewish family. Although initially he was brought up without religion and was later baptized as a Reformed Christian. His father was Abraham Mendelssohn who was a banker. Felix's mother was Leah Solomon who was a member of the Itzig family Mendelssohn was the second of four children, and his older sister Fanny was also had an exceptional musical talent. He moved with his family to Berlin in 1811. Unfortunately, his father Abraham disinclined Felix’s musical career until he became serious and dedicated himself to music. In 1836, a year after his father died, He met Cecile Jeanrenaud a clergyman's daughter, in Frankfurt. She was just 16 when they got engaged. They married on March 28, 1837. Over the course of their marriage, they had five children.

Like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart before him, Mendelssohn was regarded as a child prodigy. He began taking piano lessons from his mother when he was six, and at seven, he was tutored by Marie Bigot in Paris. After his family moved to Berlin, all four Mendelssohn children studied piano with Ludwig Berger, who was a former student of Muzio Clementi.
