Hattie McDaniel was born in Wichita, Kansas on June 10, 1893; she was her parents' 13th child. Her father, Henry, was a Civil War veteran who suffered greatly from war injuries and had a difficult time with manual labor her mother, Susan Holbert, did domestic work. She remained humble in all her endeavors and was a beacon that shined a light on being courageous, even though there was some adversity. She stayed faithful and endured to the end until unexpectedly; she suffered a heart attack, which McDaniel was later diagnosed with breast cancer in 1952. (Biography, 2006). Hattie McDaniel lost her battle with cancer in Los Angeles, California, on October 26, 1952. Since her death, McDaniel has been posthumously awarded two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Additionally, in 1975, she was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame. (Biography, 2006).

In Conclusion, Hattie McDaniel is a very important individual to today’s media industry, her hard-work and determination planted a seed in the film, music, and radio industry for African- Americans that allows them to be themselves, bring creative ideas to their communities, involving radio and music production, not only being involved just with the communities, but to broaden the horizons to the industry; because it so much to learn and discover. “I sincerely hope I shall always be a credit to my race and to the motion picture industry.”
