If you love baseball this is the perfect story for you. This is about baseball. This is a different story because everything is true. Everything happened We are a team of eleven. All 12 or 13 years old. We at first when we first met we were all just getting to know each other by asking ‘What school do you go to’ and ‘What's your name’. But after about the first few practices we were talking to each other like we’ve known each other all our lives. We a had our nicknames. I was McBird. One kid was shiny toe because his cleats were really shiny. We were getting ready for our first game. We were to play the Cubs. We didn’t know what to expect really. I don’t think anybody played better than anybody else.

On a cool September afternoon in the late 1940s, he stepped up to the plate. The thunderous sounds of boos filled the entire stadium as the lone black player stood tall in the batter's box. Fans, of both teams, belted beer bottles and boxes of cracker jacks onto the field. A chant of “hit the nigger” echoed throughout the ballpark. The catcher made his signal, and the pitcher stared down the batter with an evil eye.…

Baseball: the sport where you stand around for 20 minutes and move 3 feet to the left and move 3 feet to the right. It’s so intense. It’s so intense that you could take a nap on the field with everything out there. Of course, I’m being sarcastic. The only time it’s actually fun is when you’re annihilating the other team while they’re asleep on the field.…

Five years in a row, undefeated each season, had the best team in the league. It was just another Sunday afternoon, my team and I were prepared for another championship game. Going into the games we held our heads high, knowing we were the defending champs for five years straight, never losing a game, and absolutely destroying our opponents by large margins of victory. It was the Huskies vs. the Heat, you could say they were our rivals, but we knew that they couldn’t handle the competition we competed at. Every game we played against them, we blew them out, enjoying the sweet taste of victory.…

But these stages could not prepare me for where I was about to play next. The University of Dayton baseball stadium, the nicest natural field I have ever played on. It was beautiful from the seats, the mound, the outfield wall, it was all gorgeous.…

I live day to day, going through the works: wake up at the ungodly hour of six A.M., make it through my classes, two hours of volleyball, finally go home, repeat. But, in between all of the rushing, the yelling, the stress of high school, is when I get to relax. It’s when I get to forget about school, or as I call it “college auditions” and when I can just have a nice time without having to weigh the pros and cons of every thing I do. Every day, after the last bell rings, I navigate through the throngs of intimidating upperclassmen. It’s like The Hunger Games, stay calm, keep your head down, and try not to piss anyone off.…
