Chinese New Year is a wonderful occasion for families to gather and reunite with each other. Besides that, everyone is hoping for a good fortune in the year ahead. However, do you know everything you do is associated with luck and prosperity? Here are the some vital customs and superstitions that lead you to a prosperous year and avoid the embarrassment when you are visiting other houses.
Don’t:
1. Wearing the black colour shirt

Chinese people believe that, the red colour is an good omen and considered particularly auspicious compared to BLACK colour. The Black colour is not just a dislike colour from elder but also symbolises mourning. “Because you know CNY is all about that red, about that red, about that red.’’ What are you waiting for?

Eating porridge

When it comes to CNY, porridge should not be eaten with your family. Grandparents consider that porridge will bring bad luck and signifies poverty. For myself, I don’t eat porridge too because parent doesn’t want to start the year “poor” as this is an ill omen.
3. Taking medicine

Did you know? You will get ill for one whole year if you are taking medicine on the first day of the lunar year. As a soft reminder, drink as many waters as you can avoid this happening in your CNY period.
4. Carry over debt

Money should pay off before CNY because people believe that you will be cursed with owing people money for the rest of your life. If someone who owes you money, do not go his/her home to demand it or else you will be unlucky all the year. Do you own your friend money? Faster returns back to them before CNY.

5. Sweep the floor

“Don’t sweep the floor Ah Girl!” sounds so familiar with this? I was experienced with this warning by parents too. They don’t allow us to sweep the floor, especially the first day of lunar year because the act of sweeping is associated with sweeping the wealth away.

Did you know the meaning behind these foods? Fish(yu) is one of the main dishes because the Chinese word for “surplus” or “profit” sounds similar to the word of fish. Therefore, eating fish will bring wealth in the brand new year. Prawn pronounces as “ha” in Cantonese which means the laughter of joy. Chinese people believe that, prawn can bring happiness to your life.
3. Lucky Money (Ya Sui Qian)

Lucky money is usually the cash put in a red envelope (angpao) which given to children as a Chinese New Year blessing from the elder. The reason we called as lucky money is because Ya Sui Qian literally means “suppressing age money,” which is to stop children from getting older. I’ll definitely collect as much of lucky money as I can!
4. Shou Sui

Shou Sui is when members of the family will normally stay awake after the New Year’s Eve dinner. Following the tradition of cny, shou sui will increase the longevity of parents. For me, this is the best moment to chit-chat with siblings too while staying late in the night.
