Personal Reflection On Provisional-P Leadership Behavior

Improved Essays
In my recent studies of my Course 15 material, the FRLD module has taught me that I typically gravitate toward a MBE-P leadership behavior. I tend to give vague instructions to my subordinates, and allow them to work unsupervised until the project is complete (often offering no additional guidance). I usually intervene only when problems arise. It is unacceptable to maintain this behavior if I wish to attain my goals. Because transformational leaders are the most effective and active leaders, I would eventually like to be perceived as such by my subordinates, peers, and supervisors. Over the next 3-5 years, I plan to improve my leadership effectiveness by incorporating 5 concepts into how I lead my section. Those concepts are: the FAIR …show more content…
Adaptability means to effectively respond to changes in situations by seeking information, and being open to different ideas. I will be at my unit for at least 3 years, so this concept falls in line perfectly with my plan. Since changes occur almost daily in my unit, being adaptable will help me and my subordinates manage these situations. There are 3 main elements of adaptability that I need to focus on to foster a positive work environment for my subordinates and peers. Cognitive flexibility means having the ability to use different strategies to solve problems, and I can improve this by having multiple contingency plans in mind so that changes can be made due to unforeseen circumstances. Emotional flexibility is the way in which I deal with my emotions, and the emotions of others. I feel that I am strongest in this area, but I understand that I can always improve. Dispositional flexibility is the ability to remain positive and realistic when unexpected changes occur. This would be increasingly difficult in my unit if I didn’t already have an all-star team. In order to be adaptable, I have to possess at least 2 of these 3 characteristics. However, I want to eventually be seen by my subordinates, peers, and supervisors as a transformational leader, and I believe that a transformational leader is able to effectively exhibit all 3 characteristics. With that said, that is what I am striving …show more content…
I have no problem including this concept into my plan because I already flaunt these values proudly. Integrity means doing the right thing even when no one is looking. Because we ultimately have the lives of others in our hands, my section is trusted to display the utmost integrity. Service is employing selfless dedication to duty at all times, and I will continue to encourage my subordinates to follow me in exhibiting this value. As riggers, excellence is my section’s main focus. We provide reliable equipment to Pararescuemen so they can safely reach those in need of assistance. Continuing to apply this concept to my development will improve my effectiveness as a leader to my subordinates and peers. Moreover, I will become the transformational leader that my supervisors

In order to be an exemplary leader the authors, Kouzes and Posner, (2012), describe five practices that need to be implemented. Each practice defines leadership and what a leader should strive to perfect in being successful. To model the way shares the same concept of practicing what you preach, (Kouzes and Posner, 2012). If you want your subordinates to have a strong work ethic a leader must practice the same, by setting the example in order for others to follow, (Kouzes and Posner, 2012). As a leader you must be willing to roll up your sleeves and put forth the effort, your actions will set the pace, (Kouzes and Posner, 2012).…

Transformational leaders view relationships between the leader and the follower with extreme importance. Transformational leaders also build a mutual vision, they encourage motivation and participation, they share information through team work and trust, they are role models with their goal settings and behaviors, and are flexible in dealing with unforeseen issues (Taylor, 2009). My experience with my manager has been a positive one. She is a great motivator.…

Through this process of self-evaluation, I have a better understanding of who I am and what I want to become. It has brought into focus all the traits I like about myself as well as where I can improve. These assessments also exposed contradictions between some of the beliefs I have about myself and what has been found to be true. I am not surprised to find that my Jungian Typology is an INFJ – A (Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling, Judging & Assertive), known as the Advocate. As an Advocate, whose core motivation is to be humanitarian-driven and idealistic, it explains why I receive such satisfaction from my job, which has been proven to be a challenge for me in the past.…

The concepts from Course 15 that I chose to enable me to become a better leader are idealized influence, trust, ethical behaviors, prevention area of the Discipline Model, and active listening. I see myself as currently being a process manager type leader. I use active management by exception for correcting my subordinates, and to reward their good behavior. I take an interest in the people that I work with, but one of my subordinates told me that the only reason I care about their life is due to how it reflects on me. To me, this is a failure on my part for not developing my idealized influence, and correctly applying active listening.…

After taking the leadership assessment, the result showed that the predominant leadership style that influenced me the most is the transformational leadership, which is consistent with my current role in nursing. Your leadership style defines your values and beliefs, and how you relate to people, you encounter on a daily basis. Transformational leadership is a term used “to define successful leaders in different kind of organizations and focuses on change and innovation by connecting with individuals and teams” (LeBlanc, 2014, p.49). I consider myself as a good influence to my coworkers by being a resource person and trusting my opinion when asked for assistance in skills and knowledge in case management. In addition, I encourage and support…

Reflecting on my leadership style and personality it is easier to understand how I behave as a follower and why I do so. As a follower, I need a leader who is capable of utilizing the situational approach strategically. Inefficiency, micromanagement, lack of quantifiable rewards, and the inability to speak out irritate me quickly and I have no problem addressing it. I was in the National Guard for six years and I decided to leave due to the things I mentioned above. I felt like I wasted the time because I was able to act as a leader and learn great skills, but I have nothing to show for it in terms of rank and/or awards.…

Introduction As I reflect on this course and the results of the Questionnaires, Reflection, and Action Worksheets I have learned many aspects of leadership. I have analyzed the definition of leadership and now have a clearer understanding of it. According to, Introduction to Leadership; concepts and practice, by Peter Northouse (2015), leadership can be composed of many variables such as relationship, trait, ability, skill, behavior, and influence process. He also elaborates on how the “leadership of an individual can be used to influence a group to accomplish a common goal”. In addition, he discusses how leadership is not the same as management (Northouse, 2015, pp. 3-7).…
