Throughout the article, “The Jones Family’s Culture of Literacy,” by Amy Suzanne Johnson, one of the most interesting paragraphs to me appears before she even analyzes the family. The paragraph titled, “My Role as Researcher,” really stood out to me due to it’s unique nature due to her role as a researcher and her background. Johnson is European American and has some bias with her; however, she recognizes that and admits to it. I learned that as a researcher you need to unbiased no matter your background, and it’s good to address your own bias. She even stated the purpose of their interviews because she truly wanted to learn and to better understand their lives.…

One of the main literacy sponsors growing up was my mom. She was a three grade teacher until I was born. As I grew up she made sure I was reading a book and not wasting all my time watching tv. When I was still learning how to read chapter books my mom would sit on the couch with me and read for at least forty minutes every day so that I grew my read and vocabulary skills. On car rides, weather it was long or short, or if I was just sitting at the baseball field watching my brother play she always made me bring a book with me.…

Not only did she allow me the opportunity to introduce myself on my terms, disclosing how much or little as I desired, but she also discreetly introduced me to a wide-variety of issues that are relevant to the field and specific to this agency.
