The Metamorphosis: Literary Ananlysis “The Metamorphosis” written by Franz Kafka shows how families aren’t always there for their loved ones and the ones they claim to matter the most. Gregor is isolated from the real world and does not see his family often, as he spends much time in his room. He is used for his money, and his sister Grete, who is the one person that cares for Gregor the most, is not always there for him. The Samsa family’s relationship with their son Gregor is an indictment of conditional love.

His family was begging for him to unlock the doors to his room and his sister whispered to him “Gregor, open up, I beg you.” (p. 129) His sister was crying and begging her brother to unlock the doors but he wouldn’t do it. Towards the end of Gregor’s life, his sister, who was the one member of his family who was always there for him, started to see Gregor as a burden. In the beginning of Gregor’s new life as a bug, his sister was crying for him to unlock the doors so she could see him, and towards the end of Gregor’s life she was crying to her mother and father to get rid of Gregor. When Gregor passed away, his mother and father stated that “it seemed to them a confirmation of their new dreams and good intentions, when, at the end of the journey, their daughter rose first and stretched her young body” (Kafka, p.168). This shows that his family does not grieve at the fact that Gregor has passed away. This is the conditional love that the Samsa family expressed towards their son. The death of Gregor was not something that saddened or hurt the family, but instead was a way of the family moving on towards a better
