Mr. Meza's Classroom Observation

Class Description: I observed Mr. Meza’s classroom which consisted of 10th grade English students. His classroom was set up so that his students were seated in groups of four. His classroom was of average size however, it felt a tad bit crowded simply because of the organization of the tables. The tables were scattered instead of aligned and/or equally spaced. Some posters and assignments were up on the walls but there were more school rules and regulations that met the eye at first glance. The room was equipped with technology and writing tools. All of the students were Hispanic and most of them were female.
Observation: Students respected Mr. Meza and recognized that he was their authority figure. Very rarely would students have side conversations and they were quick to act when Mr. Meza called for attention. Though when the students did happen to lose focus or refused to remain quiet, Mr. Meza said that they were not wasting his time, but instead wasting their own time. He repeatedly said “I’ll wait” when students were talking and not listening to him and within a few seconds, the students stopped their conversations and payed attention to his instructions. After Mr. Meza handed back a graded

Meza had students participate in class discussions by calling out their names rather than having the students raise their hands. This encourages students to actually keep up with the lecture and be alert of the material since they are unaware of who will be called. Also, by doing this, students are less likely to shout over each other and a fair chance is given to every student to participate, including those who are shy. Although students were seated in groups of four, it appears that the class relied more on the concept of class discussions and not group work. My first impression of Mr. Meza was that he was moreso on the ‘“strict” side due to how well the students behaved, as if they knew his threats weren’t

Education in schools has long been a heated topic, especially in regards to what its purpose is. On one hand, some, such as the ACSD Committee, argue that education’s purpose is “to provide for the fullest possible development of each learner for living morally, creatively, and productively in a democratic society.” However, others identify a far more critical purpose of education, such as that of Jean Anyon. Anyon theorizes in her article “Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work,” that the function of our educational systems is to uphold the structure of today’s society that keeps the working class majority oppressed and its top 1% superior to the working class through the way the curriculum is taught. As someone who has been in school…

Throughout this time spent together the students read books in which they can relate to, eventually they are more open and go on to talk about their personal lives and how they feel about school. Many of her students don’t have a positive view on school and feel left out. Besides difficulties at school they also face difficulties at home, often at times they carry worrisome emotions that shouldn’t be present in a kid. When reading this article, things to keep in mind is the main purpose. The last paragraph was clear to state the main purpose, “I realized the importance of not grouping all Latina/o narratives into one stereotypical box.…

Some teachers prefer class to be silent and appreciate when students work on their own, while other teachers like to see students making comments and having discussions about the material. Likewise, when students discovered which teachers prefered which type of students they changed to fit into that teachers perfect student. Pope states, “The students may use the disguises to hide their weakness or to show off their strengths, but in either case, the teacher is privy to only a partial view, often resulting in a lack of useful knowledge about the students, or worse, misconstructions about the youth.” An example of this claim is Teresa, one of the students Pope studied, she excelled in her business classes, and when she was nominated for Outstanding Business Award, her Spanish teacher was perplexed. He said that she often failed tests and didn’t turn in assignments.…

oday I had the privilege of observing Mr. Pope during his Economics class. His students were on-task, engaged, and met every expectation he placed before them. One thing I think I can take away from his class is the way he addresses students. During the class, he did not raise his voice once, nor compete for the attention of the class. When a student was off task, rather than angrily confront them, he expressed concern, asking them if everything was all right.…

Mr. Vallario has various rules and expectations. Some of which are coming into the classroom on time, sitting in your assigned seat, doing your work, raising their hand when asking/answering a question, being respectful to other students and him, and the last one is putting back any leftover materials that have not been used or have been used. Mr. Vallario does not post his rules instead he hands out a paper on the first day of class and goes over it with the students until the students understand. Some of the students follow the rules and some do not. One of the students almost takes his seat in class and shows up late a lot and when he does show up on time he is very disruptive.…

Reflection of Class Lesson The teaching methods that I used in my lesson incorporated a variety of the Universal Design for Learning Principles and co-teaching strategies, which supported all of the students in the classroom, including students with disabilities and exceptionalities. As a means for engagement, I explained in my warm-up why learning root words is important for the students’ future lives, which relates the material to real life situations that they can relate to in their own circumstances (National Center on UDL, 2016). During the PowerPoint portion of the lesson, I called upon students by using a randomizer to actively operate the white board, which engages them by interacting with me, the mentor teacher, and their peers in…
