Norcal Harvesting Experience

As I was walking towards the door getting closer to the entrance of the NorCal Harvesting office I observed and looked at my surroundings. The weather was pleasant and windy, the birds whistling and singing a charming melody and people walking in and out of the building. For a minute, I was observing and paying close attention to my surroundings and thought to myself “How lucky am I to be here today”, I looked back and saw the big parking space that the office has which has the perfect size to organize and plan an event. Last week the team members of El Jardin and I got together and discussed the successes and challenges of the program. One of the biggest challenges and concerns of the program is analyzing why students are not showing up to the program and why is the program not becoming successful. Besides serving and helping the students with their academic another interesting task that I have is coming up with an idea on how to recruit more service learners and how to motivate more students of farm working families to attend and participate in the program. Last week one of the program members mentioned that in order motivate more students and inform parents about the homework program it would be a great idea to begin organizing a small event like a carnival and invite farm working families with children to this event. The big focus of this event is to inform parents about the resources of the program and for parents to have the opportunity to meet service learners like myself who come from the same background …show more content…
I believe that organizing this event will not be easy because the program needs a lot of support however if the program is able to organize something like a carnival or a small event I am sure that this will motivate students to participate and parents to feel more comfortable with the staff and

One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

We could have a face painting booth available, where certain designs can be painted on someone’s face with glowing face paint for a dollar or two. I’m sure there will be some people that would like to go along with the black light- themed. This will give an effect of a cool type of party that some students have attended before. If not that, the ASB should just continue what they are doing because they are already doing a fantastic job with everything they…

Through participation in a service that directly impacts the Latino community, I learned about Latino culture beyond a classroom setting. I provided my service at the Latin American Festival in Longs Park, Lancaster, PA on October 10, 2015. There were several activities that the coordinator had the group of volunteers do, such as help with children’s activities, parking duty, stage crew, information booth, program distribution, and the workshops. The activities that I had to do were to direct the performers to their dressing rooms and make sure no one enters the room as the performers get ready. Since the dressing rooms were right next to the bathrooms, I had to direct the public as to which doors were for the bathrooms to avoid confusion.…
