At the start of employment with the Billings 911 Center I believe my values where in alignment with my place of employment. Although, with the passing of time, my values have shifted and I now experience more a cultural strain instead of the cultural fit I once knew. When I first started at the Billings 911 Center, I was a naïve twenty-one year old. I had come from a structured home with a high PDI and more willing to accept a large power difference. It was normal for me to be told what to do and I easily accepted it. My supervisors were older and I was taught to respect and learn from my supervisors and senior dispatchers. I understand this government agency needs the strict rules and clearly defined standard operating procedures. At first, I just accepted the uncertainty avoidance; that was just how things were. You show up, do your job how you were trained, don’t deviate from the norm and return and do all over the next day. This stress driven, neurotic environment is becoming more and more uncomfortable for me to subsist. Until I am in a position to change jobs, I have learned to accept that until management changes hands or I leave, this organization will not be comfortable with ambiguity and will continue their attempts to control uncertainty with regulations. In regard to the remaining two continuums, MAS and IDV, my values are closely related to my work culture. I am quicker to accept that there is a difference in genders, but we both agree that in the workplace, there should be no difference in treatment between the sexes. The collectivism values of the Billings 911 Center are nearly identical to my own. Upon my departure from the Billings 911 Center, the thing I will miss the most is the closeness and support I receive from my “work
