An Autumn Homicide
Riding my bike to a friend’s house on a late fall day in October just before the clocks are set to fall back, a day that I remember so vividly. The transition of shorter days and longer nights where the leaves are changing to a reddish brown color just before falling with the sight of dusk upon us. It was on this day that my life almost ceased to no longer exist.

He calls out “it’s a negative a negative I’m going in” to no one in particular. The officer in his steel toed boots which accompanied his police uniform kicked the door open only to have the door slam back close. As I stand there watching the police officer take his semi-automatic gun out of the leather band holster and proceed to enter the apartment complex across the walkway more units have arrived to start sectioning off the area with yellow crime scene tape. To my horror, a man’s body lay at the front door with blood pooling around his body when a petite brown skin female officer approaches me and moves me out of sight of the action. She begins to ask me several questions about the chain and events and reveal that I would have to come down to the station to make a statement. As I walk to her patrol car and get in the front seat I ask her “was that man dead?” she replies “very” and my heart sinks. As I sit in the front seat of her car she tells me that I have to put my head down as reports are showing up to the crime scene and because I am a minor I cannot be on camera without permission of my parents. We arrive at the station and I am taken into the back room where the

Well I wasn’t actually smiling and as brutal as I made it sound, it wasn’t as horrific an event now that I look back on it. The incident occurred while I was on Spring Break during my freshman year in high school. My family and I were vacationing in Gatlinburg, Tennessee;which if I might add we’ve been there about eight times since I was seven years old. I remember clearly that day down to the exact temperature.…

Undercover cops were used to diving in dumpsters, he wiped the spoiled food off the butcher’s knife and bagged it, just another day on the job for the stocky built Irishman, a fireplug, with a relentless pursuit of bad guys. His back-up pulled in the alleyway, with the disposition of a talk show host, before his morning coffee. He barked at Joey about some stupid shit, handed him a cup of brew, and sped down 4th Street, they were on their way to the rear entrance of the police station.
