The hero cycle has long been a staple of legends and tales. Everyone knows the story; the pattern is practically set in stone and finds use from the classics of ancient Greece and Rome all the way to Star Wars. Odysseus is one of the earliest examples of the hero cycle. His path parallels that of literature’s archetypical hero: he undergoes a long journey fraught with supernatural forces that test his mettle. Furthermore, Odysseus finds himself exploring beyond the mortal veil as he travels to Hades to seek the prophet, Tiresias.…
A giant. A giant is a mythological beast that is supposed to be larger than any human ever will be. A giant is supposed to be very strong and muscular. A giant is supposed to not be real, but there is. His name is Chris Leprechaun.…
As divulged by Joseph Campbell in the Hero’s Journey, a common theme exists within a variety of well-known stories: the monomyth. A monomyth is defined as “An archetypal myth; a theme that underlies a number of superficially different myths” (Oxford Dictionary). This recurring sequence of events has been utilized in the modern novel as well as undying legends of greek heroes such as Odysseus. Spanning through numerous cultures and centuries, the monomyth is not solely based in American or Roman based literature. In Chinese Folklore, “The Lady In The Moon” describes the plight of Hou Yi, his wife Chang’e, and the Jade Rabbit.…
How does one become “immortal”? To answer that you’d have to pick a definition of immortal. For me that definition is to be remembered for many years to come, most likely not by millions of people, but by a few. In reading the Epic of Gilgamesh something dawned on me, what would I want to be remembered for if I died today? Seeing as I’ve never truly considered it, it took me a good while to determine the things I would want to be written into the history books for.…
Martin Luther King Jr. Once said ,"Our loyalties must transcend our race ,our tribe ,our lass , and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective. Everyone in due time, if not already, their perspective has changed. The day I witnessed my aunt graduate and become a Chiropractor after all the time she spend trying to become a dentist and decide to change paths. She's always wanted to become a dentist but then deciding she wasn't very much interested in pursuing down the road to becoming one.…
Doesn’t it feel like you are on your own hero’s journey? The Odyssey was a story about a man named Odysseus who went to Troy to fight a war,but after the war Odysseus mocked the gods and made the god of the sea Poseidon angry. Poseidon was so mad that he kept Odysseus from returning home to his family and Odysseus went to a whole new world to try and make it home. I think that the Odyssey was a great example of the hero's journey and i will tell you why.…
Have you ever encountered an absolutely gorgeous, charismatic hunk-of-man who, upon meeting him for the first time, had you convinced every move you'd made in your life, up to that point, led you directly to him? Did you feel strangely alive at the time; nevertheless fearing you might die because you suddenly forgot how to inhale, becoming light-headed due to a lack of oxygen? Initially, you probably fell into a state of panic as your eyes grew wide and your heart pounded painfully in your chest, but just in the knick of time you suddenly remembered you could breathe all on your own. In the days that followed, did you diligently fill every waking moment of your day with thoughts of him, reliving every second of the magic, never wanting to…
So it started out as a normal school day and as we were coming back from lunch we all went to the restroom and only six of us got taken. As we were using the restroom Andrew Myers, Jahzara Mckinney, Kadance Gravely, Maddox Lyons, Hayden Elliott, Kaylie Hawks and myself were pulled into the sewers and through a pipe that somehow took us to a island. We were stranded there by ourselves the island was like a forest in a way it has tall redwood trees high grass like the jungle and a beautiful glossering pond. So as we were there we were all panicking then I just got really quiet. We went to bed and the next morning Hayden and Jahzara were fighting over food we had from killing Andrew we had a lot of food left over from yesterday but both Jahzara and Hayden wanted that same piece.…
After a long time at war, we were finally trying to sail home to Ithaca, but Zeus did not agree and sent a storm towards us. Odysseus tried to keep us safe from the raging storm and docked us somewhere safe from the wind. I managed to stay quiet for about half of the first day we were docked, but I soon began to get anxious and hungry. “Odysseus, when do you think we can eat something?” I asked.…
When I and Roberto got deported to the border we thought if they got our parents, too but I was confused why it happens. But while in the truck I was just thinking about stuff they could of happened to them. But who arrested me took me to his truck and said they caught me. But while I was there I heard a noise in his radio saying they had to go to the next one…
In “The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus, King of Ithaca, goes through several obstacles on his journey home after a long fight in the Trojan War. The “Hero's Journey” by Jason Campbell represents an outline of what Odysseus must go through to deem himself a king and hero. Through the epic, readers learn how important each stage of the Hero's Journey is to Odysseus and his need to become a hero. There are three main events Odysseus goes through to meet requirements of the “Hero's Journey.” These requirements are: Entering the Unknown, Allies/Helpers, and he is put through Tests and Supreme Ordeal.…
In an unheard-of myth, Atalanta acts as a female deity, who is known for her immense strength and agility. She has had an eventful childhood that makes her very powerful. Atlanta has defeated many battles that have made her prominent. She is an exemplary huntress and could out race any man. The Hero’s Journey is a pattern that is found in many different types of literature and was written by Joseph Campbell.…
Joseph Campbell, the creator of the hero’s journey, did a lot of research on ancient mythology. He discovered that many heroes travel the same paths to becoming a hero. Campbell decided that heroes come across many challenges that are put into stages and in those stages the hero grows closer to the reward at the end. I am definitely not a hero, but my journey of finding Christ and giving my life to him has absolutely made me into a better person overall. As I look at my journey of finding Christ, I see that it has many similarities to Campbell’s Hero’s Journey.…
Every Sunday morning, I pull up last week’s This American Life podcast on my phone, lace up my running shoes, and begin my trek up Lone Mountain – a heap of dirt, gravel, and rock, sitting isolated amidst suburban wasteland. Reaching the top, I stare out at a lackluster view of Las Vegas’ silhouette, barely distinguishable through the dust and smog shifting with the desert breeze. I look down at the 600ft drop briefly, turn around, and begin my trip back home – only to repeat the same journey next Sunday. There is no breathtaking view or unique wildlife to draw me to my hike: it is the piercing cold air and aggressive terrain that instead excites my core.…
The Epic Poem, “The Odyssey”, written by Homer, shows when the journey is more important than the destination in several different places. One example that shows this in the text is in the section, “Sailing From Troy”. In this section, Homer relates through his words of how Odysseus and his men are blown by the winds to Ismarus, on the coast of Cicones. He writes that Odysseus and his men “stormed that place and killed the men who fought(Homer 44). They proceed to plunder the place and divide the loot between themselves.…
