There has come a time in the United States and other well-developed countries that large corporations have much more control than the general public would care to admit. This is particularly true with the greatest industry in the United States, the pharmaceutical industry. Affectionately known as “Big Pharma”, they have their influence in just about every aspect of healthcare; from the conducting of clinical trials, creating new drugs, the publication of medical journals, funding research, paying physicians commissions, and far beyond. Physicians nationwide read prestigious medical journals, such as New England Journal of medicine and believe they are fact. Unfortunately, the monopoly of Big Pharma has far too much control over how physicians…
Another outcome of physicians’ superiority perspective is deficit in professional communication. One member of nursing board stated: "I think part of the events that occurred in our society, is in the hospital. As people in our society are far from each other, it has happened in the hospital. Before not like this. Previously, when the doctor came to the ward, at first greet the nurse, then went to see the patients with nurse and during the patients 'visit, the nursing students were also accompany them.…
Sixteen years ago after working fifteen years in the clinical setting of healthcare, I stepped out and accepted a job as a physician liaison for a community hospital. In 2001 physician liaisons were brand new to the healthcare world. They were described as an individual hired to build relationships with healthcare provider offices in order to market service lines for hospital facilities, large physician groups, or other healthcare organizations. In a nutshell, they keep the lines of communication open to generate new business and retain established referrals. ("Physician liaison," n.d.)…

Public health is a very broad field and many times encourages many to pursue a career in the medical field. There are many options to be considered, one of them being a physician assistant. A physician assistant is a licensed medical provider who can diagnose, treat and also prescribe medicine to patients. Physician assistants work within a written agreement with a licensed physician, but they have their own patients and the right to make clinical decisions with the supervision of that physician.…
Events of the past, present, and future have always interested me. Studying the information on the history and progression of the physician assistant profession has been no exception. The history of the physician assistant occupation denotes the importance of its position in healthcare. Prior to the first formal education received by future physician assistants in 1965-1967, by Eugene A Stead, Jr., Dr. Amos Johnson and his proprietary trained assistant Henry Treadwell, became a model for Stead’s first class of PA students. The Johnson/Treadwell model represented, present, on the job training for non-physician personnel to assist physicians in practice.…
Due to the physician shortage in the United States, there has been an increase in the physician assistant profession. Physician Assistants are well known members of the medical field, providing care for patients studying under the authority of a physician. However, in order to assist patients, Physician Assistants have requirements that need to be completed in order for them to provide for patients. With their training and education, which creates an experienced and flexible medical professional who can function in many specialty areas, Physician Assistants are part of the solution to help stop the expected physician shortage and increase care for patients.…
Physician assistants are health care professionals licensed to practice medicine under the supervision of a physician (AAPA). These health care professionals are educated to provide treatment, diagnostics of injuries or illnesses, preform physical examinations, take medical histories, order laboratory tests and x-rays, and depending on their level of study they may assist in surgery procedures (Bureau of Labor Statistics). The code of ethics for the health care occupation of a Physician assistant has “four main principles: autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice”(AAPA). What these codes mean is that patients have the right to make their own choices regarding their treatment and health and as such the physician assistant should respect these choices and abide by them.…
The practice of using non-physicians to practice medical has a history, oftentimes in remote areas people have had to step up and learn medical procedures and care. Following World War II, specialization in medicine became more popular, and there became on shortage in primary health care providers. The Physician Assistant profession was first proposed in the United States when Charles Hudson advocated for a “creation of two new groups of assistants to doctors from non medical and non nursing personnel”. In 1965, Duke University created the first Physician Assistant Program led by Dr. Eugene Stead.…
As a college student, I am studying to be in the medical field. Wanting to be in the medical field has been my dream as a kid. What is a registered nurse?…
I have decided to pursue the paraprofessional certification for many reasons being a mother of three school aged children and marrying just out of high school I chose not to go to College and be a stay at home mom. Now with my children being older I recently took a job in the school cafeteria, but I would much rather work with children. The reason I want to pursue my paraprofessional certification is because I love working with children, and also having the time to be able to participate in all my children’s activities. I love working with children and feel that I have alot to offer. I would eventually like return to school and become a teacher.…
What is professionalism in the context of being a student in a doctor of physical therapy degree program? While being engrossed with the question, the definition of professionalism that I read in the APTA as defined by Stern DPT, I had an intuitive perception. I began to ponder that I could certainly apply that definition to where I am in my journey. Although I am not currently a student of a doctor of physical therapy program, my personal, educational, and volunteer experiences have already begun to prepare me for my role as a future student of a DPT program. I can still remember the first time I had a personal experience involving physical therapy.…
The healthcare industry is thriving, despite today’s harsh economic times. For this reason, when considering their career options, many students may turn to medicine. There are several professions in the medical field from which students can choose, including home health aides, pharmacists, nurses, and even doctors. If the student decides to pursue a more hands-on patient care career, they find themselves at a crossroad with one path leading toward a career as a doctor (MD) and the other leading towards a career as a physician assistant (PA). This is a difficult choice for many students interested in the medical field; both professions offer patient care, are high-paying, and require rigorous schooling.…
PhyCor, one of the heavy hitters in the physician practice management sector experienced highs and lows of its business. PhyCor provided physicians with an alternative to private practice rather than practicing at large, corporate firms. As physicians became more focused on patient care, firm such as PhyCor gave them the opportunity to entrust their finances and “paper work” to management practices. PhyCor reigned the industry. The firm successfully established many startups and acquired other management practices that were competitors.…
Reflection On Professional Organizations I have been conducting research on some professional organizations and I have determined that ASHP would be a good match for me. This is because ASHP is an organization that is heavily involved in advocating legislation to benefit pharmacists, patients, and the health care system. Some of the most important issues to me are getting the pharmacist more involved in a patient’s health care and to make health care in general more efficient. ASHP is attempting to accomplish these tasks by actively advocating legislation to meet their goals.…
