Polit And Beck 2012: The Gold Standard In Nursing Research

Improved Essays
Polit and Beck (2012), often considered the gold standard in nursing research, discuss how nurses arrive at questions or hypotheses to be researched. These authors indicate it is not imperative to base nursing research on any theory. These authors explain that having a set or research questions or hypotheses inspired from direct observation or experience alone is sufficient (pp. 142-143), Burns et al (2013) assert nursing research is the “scientific process that validates and refines existing knowledge and generates new knowledge that directly or indirectly influences nursing practice” (as cited by McEwen& Willis, 2014, p.449). This statement emphasizes it is less important from where a nurse draws inspiration for research, and more important

It is clear from the findings of the CCQ and the Francis report that there is a dissonance between professional nursing theory and what actually happens in nursing practice. In order to bridge this gap, it is essential for nurses to understand how to research effectively with the purpose of discovering best evidence which can be applied to nursing practice (Schmidt and Brown, 2012). By using up to date and expert evidence generated from effective research, all healthcare professionals can make good clinical decisions about individual patient care (Greenhalgh, 2010). To develop an understanding and appreciation of the value of research I performed on line module activities which provided me with learning opportunities to develop reflective,…

It is not only important for nurses to know the right thing to do but also to know why it is the right thing to do. For example some nurses know that a particular method must be implemented but ignore the scientific reasoning behind it, which means they don’t know what research support the method. Nursing has undergone a huge evolution as nursing research has become more robust, according to Polit and Beck (2012), and as a result there is the expectation that nurses are practicing based on current evidence. This means that nurses, in all practice areas, must be able to understand research and adopt evidence-based practice from the data and results available to them. Being able to dissect the components best practice from research will allow an organization to create a culture that promotes safety and cost effectiveness, supporting the quest for best clinical outcomes and a reputation that will promote that organization as a center of excellence. Organizational Culture and Readiness Melynk and Fineout-Overholt (2011) propose that support…

The nursing research article that I chose to critic for this assignment is entitled "The nurse work environment, job satisfaction and turnover rates in rural and urban nursing units" written by Marianne Baernholdt and Barbara A. Mark. The goal of this publication is to determine if there is a relationship between the nurse work environment and the level of satisfaction and the rate of nurses ' turnover. Urban hospitals have been the subject of research to examine this association but not rural hospitals, thus the subject of this research article. This article poses the problem of whether or not the environments in which nurses evolve and their job satisfaction level have an effect on turnover rates.…

Theory is central to effective nursing practice and research. Nursing theory offers a framework for thought in which nurses examine situations. This framework supplies structure and organization to nursing knowledge and provides a methodical means of collecting data to interpret, explain, and predict nursing practice (McEwen & Willis, 2014, p. 36). Nursing theory is crucial for the evolution of the nursing discipline. The knowledge that is developed through nursing research is used to test existing theories and to generate new theories and ideas.…

Introduction Research is a systematic and scientific inquiry that exploits meticulous methods to answer questions and solve problems. The definitive goal of research is to develop, refine and expand the body of knowledge (Polit & Beck, 2004). Extensive research is essential in nursing to develop empirical knowledge that enables nurses to deliver evidence-based nursing care (Burns & Grove, 2010). Research is generally classified into three paradigms. Qualitative research, quantitative research and mixed methods (Creswell, 2013).…
