Coal burning affects the environment in a bad way. It produces gases like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide and mercury which adds to pollution to the environment. When sulfur dioxide is in the air it then becomes sulfuric acid, when is the main component of acid rain. The burning of coal also makes a massive amount of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas which is a cause of global warming and climate change. Coal has to be mined which creates dust that floats around the air near the mine. The miners have a risk of breathing in the particles from the dust and that can clog up their airways to the lungs. Coal worker’s pneumoconiosis is also known as black lung disease is very common among coal miners because of how much exposure they have to coal dust. China is one of the world’s largest producers of coal and they have the most deaths due to coal production. According to New York Times, “Burning coal has the worst health impact of any source of air pollution in China and caused 366,000 premature deaths in 2013.” China is one of the biggest countries in the world and their population is still growing, which means more resources like coal will be used.
