Shakespeare develops the idea that love leads to rash decisions through the behavior of the characters Juliet and Romeo. Juliet’s deep love for Romeo is the primary reason for her to make rash decisions in the play. First, after meeting Romeo at the Capulet feast, Juliet is beguiled by him. However, she is very distressed to discover he is a Montague, and the son of her family’s rival. Alone and upset, she says in her soliloquy, “Deny thy father and refuse thy name, / Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, / And I'll no longer be a Capulet” (Shakespeare 2.2.37-39). If Juliet were not so in love with Romeo she would not give up so much. Second, Juliet is quick to make a decision when she is being forced by her parents to marry County Paris. Juliet goes to the Friar in hopes of getting out of her marriage with Paris arranged by her parents. The Friar recommends a plan, of which has many flaws. Despite this, she eagerly replies, “Give me, give me! O, tell me not of fear”(4.1.123)! This decision to follow the plan is rash because Juliet does not hesitate to accept to follow the plan. Shakespeare enhances how critical it is to not ignore the consequences of a decision. Juliet’s request to the Friar to not list the possibilities of something bad happening shows she understands that the plan is flawed. One rash decision is for Mercutio, one of his dearest friends. Mercutio has just been killed by Tybalt in a duel in the streets of Verona. Romeo angrily says to Tybalt, “for Mercutio's soul Is but a little way above our heads, staying for thine to keep him company. / Either thou or I, or both must go with him” (3.1.131-134). Romeo, now wanting to fight Tybalt, shows a change of character, for thus far in the play he has had no intent of fighting anyone. His sudden willingness to fight Tybalt to death is a rushed decision his mind has made out of love for Mercutio. He is so angry and upset that someone could have done something so wrong to someone he loves that he immediately seeks revenge. Shakespeare proves Romeo’s loyalty and love for Mercutio, if he did not love Mercutio he would not put his life on the line for him. A second time Romeo makes a rushed decision is out of his love for Juliet. Nearing the end of the play, Balthasar travels to Mantua to report to Romeo that Juliet is dead. Romeo first asks Balthasar, “Hast Thou no letters to me from the Friar?” When Balthasar answers no, Romeo says to himself, “Well, Juliet, I will lie with thee tonight”(5.1.33,37). Romeo asking the Balthasar whether the Friar has sent him any letters signifies that Romeo is aware there is the possibility of Juliet not truly being dead.
