A time where I faced an obstacle was how I didn’t make OCDA. OCDA is a choir event where you audition and compete against other students around the state of Oklahoma. Taking private lessons helped to prepare for the audition. Compressing your time in practicing is a hard thing to accomplish. In the year past, since I made OCDA seemed like a possibility, however not being one of the finalist was a real setback.…

Every weekend, thousands of people flood through the doors of local churches to gather as a body and worship together. Yet, as they walk into the church, say their hellos, settle into their seats and prepare to engage in praise and worship, do they ever really consider how the Church has come to where it is regarding congregational singing? When one considers what interesting facts our history might tell them about the journey to our present state of worship in congregational singing and to whom can we attribute for their contributions to congregational singing, there are some significant musicians to highlight. Choir Is Cult Only Slightly Less Cultish Than Band It wasn’t really a question on whether or not I was going to join choir Freshman year. Freshman year, I sat in the front row, four chairs in on the right of the choir with Spencer Evoy to my left.…

I joined the Chorus and the Vocal Ensemble at the high school and continued to try and better myself as a musician. My music department also offered me other musical opportunities such as festivals. I have attended several festivals such as the Lakes Region music festival and the All New England music festival. These festivals allowed me to come together with other students from different schools that loved singing and performing as much as I did. Every time I perform at one of these festivals I am overwhelmed by how beautiful music can be when everyone I am working with is just as passionate as I am about the work we are doing and also extremely talented.…

Through my experience, my freshman and sophomore years as a musician were terrifying. On top of the shock of the new atmosphere at school, I had to play my instrument with and in front of others, which was quite a stretch for me at the time. I would always beat myself up about minute mistakes I had glorified during rehearsals, playing tests, and especially auditions. However, after I did not make an Illinois Allstate ensemble my junior year, my approach to these nerve-wracking situations completely changed. Instead of thinking failing negatively, those uncomfortable experiences actually made me improve as I had taken more auditions.…
