Societal Commentary On The Cycle Of Life Patterson

Improved Essays
Once the climbing of the ladder concludes, the children are now seen entering the middle ages of life. This is depicted by the flat platform affixed to the ladder. The platform symbolizes how life at this stage remains static, compared to ladder, which conveyed how life is constantly growing. Furthermore, the platform is drawn on top high stilts. These elevated stilts represent the increased amount of responsibilities and pressures that occur with being middle aged. At the same time, Patterson drew three children standing on the platform who are now able to see what awaits in front of them. This is true in the Ladder for Booker T. Washington as, when walking around you can see different aspects. One thing you can notice when standing behind is that the artwork is really slanted in order to make the artwork even taller than it actually is. This observation can make the viewer notice how Puryear thought of everything in order for the artwork to appear as tall as possible. In a photograph, one might think that the focal point is the top of the ladder is the main focal point, however, when seen in the museum, one can see that the real focal point is the light on the ceiling which represent that the goal the ladder is used to reach. The way the long, crooked ladder and the light above could be a metaphor on how hard it is to reach your…

Sylvia, a young adventurous soul, is the definition of growth. Throughout the passage, the Author in recreating the heroin's (Sylvia) climb dramatizes in the eyes of adults the real adventure of the little girl. By using literary elements such as point-of-view and diction, the establishment of a more in-depth meaning to ultimately symbolize the dark path a child walks in search of the light of growth becomes created. The passage is told from a third person omniscient point-of-view, aware of Sylvia's hopes and aspirations, Sylvia is described as "small and silly" to establish the innocence of the adolescent and emphasize the contrast between heroin and feat. Although the child is typically happy and obtains a strong imagination, "she…

Emily Donaldson writes, “Children forced to cope in the absence of their parents” (Donaldson), this is one of the most important theme and also acts as a tragic event in the lives of the central characters, Ian Christopherson and Arthur Dunn, motivating them to follow their destiny. In addition, the realization of the importance of friends and family also plays an important role in carving the path to their destiny. Tragedies often worked against destiny, which was observed in the lives of Arthur and Jake Dunn when “small, unimportant event” (Lawson 338), led to dreadful consequences. As a result, tragedies show their dominance over…

Parents around the world have their opinions on how children should be raised and what is best for them, however, it is scientifically proven that the life stages Erik Erikson theorized has proven true to some degree, especially for me personally. He explains that there are eight life phases every child, adolescent, and adult go through, whether he or she is aware of it or not. I was impacted between the ages of 13 and 19 years old. Mentally, physically, and emotionally I grew up to who I am today. I have looked at older people, watched them make mistakes, told myself to be different, and I have strived for that ever since.…

All children must face the loss of innocence at one point in their lives. Alice Walker’s character Myop from her short story “The Flowers” is no exception. Myop, like most children, passes the threshold from innocence to knowledge when she chooses to embark on her own path and comes across the skeleton of a black sharecropper who had been beaten and hung because of the color of his skin. Through this discovery, she realizes the harsh truth of society. Walker portrays Myop’s loss of innocence through historical context, the juxtaposition of light and dark diction, and symbolism in order to depict a coming of age story by gaining knowledge.…

Through the process of time, an individual’s personal developments and experiences can alter future perspectives and attitudes, resulting in a discovery. Robert’s ‘Sky High’ effectively conveys how growth affect an individual’s behaviour, character and attitude towards their environment. Some individuals think the events that unfold in life are beneficial to their overall success, while others believe that the events that are taking place lead to a dark place. Nonetheless, we have to face the reality and try to make the best of what unfolds, especially during the bad and good times.
