She can read in full sentences that vary in lengths and purposes, and read more difficult sentences than she typically use. When the teacher asks her to read a long paragraph in the text, she pronounces the words well and read it out fluently, there are only two or three words she does not know since it exceed her vocabulary level. If this happened, she will guess to pronounce the word based on the first few letters. And Sophia is able to read independently by using particular comprehension strategies that helpful for her. For example, when she can not figure out a word then she is able to coordinate the strategies which is based on the phonics, sight words or sentences context in order to get clues. Also, Sophia can summary what the text talk about and state the idea when she participates in a group discussion. Those of these demonstrate that Sophia is in the independent reading stage, “students are required to self-select and read materials at their own “just right” levels, navigate texts, and practice on their own what they have learned about comprehending text.” That’s match the reading level Sophia is on, she is on the level R and she is ahead.
