William Deresiewicz claims that in the neoliberal world we live in, the market mentality drives students to attend universities purely to obtain higher paying careers, rather than to expand knowledge. This article describes how students are most interested in practicing majors corresponding with the highest salary jobs: “the most popular majors are the practical, or … the commercial ones: economics, biology, engineering, and computer science.” Today, parents invest in college with hopes to make larger investments back, due to that fact that an individual’s worth in society is based on their wealth. Students no longer attend college to question and reflect on the world, but rather to rise on the social ladder. Deresiewicz believes “college is…

It’s hard to believe that once upon time, Americans did not have the dreadful worries of finding a way to prepare for the financial necessities for college. Now, college is becoming more of a dream rather than a reality as high tuition rates becomes the number one reason why Americans are not advancing themselves into higher education. In some cases, there are college students who receive full-ride scholarships to the college they desire; however, the majority of those who do go to college do not obtain the same luck. Those students who do continue their education and go off to college find themselves short of financial aid, out-of-pocket cash, and even scholarships. This causes students to resort to taking out a student loan.…

With that being said, let’s jump right into the mix of things and talk about one of the main reasons why I believe going to college serves as an advantageous opportunity. College helps us prepare for any envisioned careers we seek. We need the preparation to be success in any line of work. In an article I found “Live and Learn: Why We Have College” by author Louis Menand. He gives his audience three different theories to choose from on why we “have college”.…

Everyone has their own path in life and although education is very important, you do not always need a university to help you get where you want to be. About 40 years ago, the American public decided that the only way to be competitive and gain an advantage in this world was through a college education. Higher education has been lamanted as “an economic imperative”(Owen and Sawhill 208) that can no longer be seen as optional or supplemental for people hoping to to attain a job in the workforce. This means that without getting a degree, you are not only shirking your responsibility as a functioning member of society, but you are also cutting yourself out of your own possible economic prospects. This relatively new attitude towards higher learning resulted in noticeable shifts throughout the country. We expanded college preparatory courses throughout the nation’s public schools and started…

Some people struggle the decision of going to college or not, due to not knowing what career they want to follow or because they are not financially able to pay for their college tuition due prices going up. College is not worth it based on these reasons: they don’t have hands on experiences, the wages haven’t grown much over the years, and it doesn’t help discover your career of interest. Each year the tuition rates go up more and more which is making students go into debt at a early age of life because they can’t afford to pay back their student loans they take out to pay back for college which leads them to bankruptcy. Things like this makes going to college more of a question and not a decision. Now nobody wants to go to school to get a education and learn about the career of their dreams to then stay in debt because they have to spend their life paying everything back.…
