August 21 - I woke up extra early today so I could go arrange something with the cooks. Nobody ever has any fun round here, so I thought we could do something a little different for Larry’s birthday. By the time breakfast started, most people were already in the cafeteria, Larry was given an extra biscuit with a single, reused candle. Larry was pretty embarrassed. We were all laughing when some of the older men tried to sing Happy Birthday, but forgot half the lyrics. After breakfast we hit the fields. With everyone in a cheery mood, we finished our workload a lot sooner. The boss came out and worked with us! Of course all the guys had fun teasing him and occasionally making fun of him for not being as fast as the rest of us. Also, his nephews were a lot nicer since he was right there with us which was good. I think he realized just how tough of a job we have. I also think we can look forward to more days like these later on.

August 22, 1932 - I woke up this morning in quite a frenzy. “Why am I still sleeping?” I thought, “Is there something wrong with me?” I looked at my pocket watch and it was half past eight. Everyone was still in their bunks. I quickly ran to

Due to the large storm the blew through all day long. Most of the guys stayed hunkered in the bunks so they didn’t get sucked into the storm itself. The boss was pretty upset considering the fact that the entire week we’ve barely gotten anything done. Said he’s gonna have to figure out a way to cut back costs so we can get by till the end of the season. Hopefully it is not the food. That’s already bad enough. And if its the equipment than we’re gonna be working a lot harder. He also mentioned firing some guys but that wouldn’t do any good because then we would have no one left to work. My idea was to get rid of the nephews. Of course I didn’t say this out loud in front of the boss, but the guys thought it was pretty funny when I told them

Voices of Protest: Huey Long, Father Coughlin & The Great Depression by Alan Brinkley is all about the journey of two men during the Great Depression and the overwhelming rise to success. Huey P. Long was a Senator from the swamp state, Louisiana; while Charles E. Coughlin was a Catholic priest from Detroit. The two were from vastly different parts of the country, but they both became two of the most successful leaders in politics during this time period. In all honesty, I did not enjoy this book. But Brinkley did teach me things I did not know before reading it, therefore, I would recommend it to other readers.…

The Great Depression is most commonly examined as a global phenomenon, with historians trying to identify consistancies around the world, the patterns of history. I, however, would like to examine the Great Depression by taking an indepth look at the effects of the depression on Alberta. I will take a social history view of the causes, effects, and efforts to solve the issues of the Great Depression to analyze the social political influence of the event on the people of Alberta. Alberta responded to the Great Depression by deciding it was time for a change in sociopolitical paradigm, which created new political parties such as Social Credit as well as a movement for more social services to protect the individual citizen from uncontrollable…

When the dreaded “Black Tuesday” occurred in October 29, 1929, the entire United States economy collapsed in a single day. The sudden lost of stock forced companies to lay off workers and made wages go lower. President Hoover’s belief in the “Laissez Faire” policy gave assurance that the Depression would end soon but, in reality 6 million Americans were unable to acquire a job by 1931. Entire cities were filled with homeless people living and eating in unsanitary conditions. Millions of lives and jobs were ruined throughout the Great Depression.…

Life during the Great Depression was terribly hard for most Americans and the gap between those that “have” and those that “have-not”. Unemployment during 1932 rose from 5 million to a shocking 13 million by year end. The state of North Carolina was primarily rural, and therefore one that would feel the greatest sufferings. Franklin Delano Roosevelt would offer comfort by introducing what would be called “The New Deal”, in an effort to put people back to work and strengthen a very depressed nation. It was introduced in two phases and would touch and reach the entire country.…

My father told me stories of his father's father, my great grandfather and growing up in the great depression in the nineteen thirties. He spoke of the many obstacles they encountered on a daily basis, like finding work to bring in income for the basic necessities for survival, such as food and clothing. During that era, many of the people in the Central Texas area were immigrants from Europe that came here to settle, farm and raise their families, this was the case with my ancestors. My great grandfather was a blacksmith by trade, he would build and fix equipment for the local farmers as well as farm and ranch himself. My grandfather had nine siblings, and everyone in the family contributed, whether it was farming, tending to the ranch livestock,…
