Literature can have that effect on readers. Authors have the ability to change the perspective of the reader when it comes to social inequality. Harry Potter, by J.K Rowling is a perfect example of an author using story as a tool to improve prejudice between differing groups of people. In life people will always have a clash between a group of people who think another group of people is threatening, but just reading about the relationships can help send a good example for attitude against stigmatized groups. Researchers in Italy took a group of children and analyzed their attitude towards immigrants. They then broke up into two groups and read excerpts from Harry Potter. One group, read about prejudice and the other didn’t. They then assessed the attitude and the one that read about prejudice saw a significant growth in their attitude towards the immigrants. Numerous things can influence the way we see people. Research shows that reading as a kid and applying the literature to real life, can have a positive impact on our attitude and social development skills. Another example of the power of words is the manifold of inequality based movies, specifically, the Blind Side. This movie has the power to overcome stereotypes. Michael Oher, who played for the Baltimore Ravens, is the person’s whose life was portrayed in the Blind Side. He had a nickname of Big Mike is evidence of the stereotype back at his home. Michael can be very scary and intimidating, being the big black man that he is. When people think of his name, they think of an unattractive black male with a bad reputation, but that would make people wrong, because nobody can judge someone before they meet them and get to know them.
