The book, Anthem, by Ayn Rand raises many questions and makes many highly opinionated statements. Such as her clearly insinuating that the philosophy of collectivism is evil, or the many themes of censorship throughout the novella. However, one of the most controversial topics in the book is the promotion of the word “ego”. While many may believe that this wrong, this novel has a positive depiction the word “ego” and that is a good thing.
The main character in Anthem begins humble and then gains more and more ego as the book progresses. Though, considering how low his self-worth was at the beginning, this was a positive thing. It has come to mean self-obsessed, narcissistic, and vain. People are sometimes wary to show that they are proud of themselves for fear of being labeled as ‘egotistical’ or ‘egocentric’/ Though, the words “ego” means a person’s self-esteem or self-worth. People should be allowed to focus on themselves or to have pride without fear of how others view them. Anthem is very good at expressing a human’s need to be recognized as an individual. As well as it is excellent at showing the base need for ‘ego’ and the benefits of ego in a person.
Ego’s real definition is a person’s self-worth, so having no ego would be very similar to having so self-esteem. MOst people are taught that they should be confident, but are simultaneously taught that ego is bad, even if they mean almost the same thing. However, when someone has too much ego, they could become too self-interested and forget about trying to help others. If all people had too much ego it would halt society and progress as a community. Though, ego on its own is not inherently a bad thing. Individuals need to acknowledge their own desires and needs.
In summary, the word “ego” had a bad reputation for no reason. The book, Anthem, was definitely a step in the right direction in trying to correct the corrupted viewpoint on this word. Overall, Ayn Rand’s positive representation of the word “ego” was a favorable thing that has, hopefully, impacted its perspective in a beneficial
