The Shack is a story of man who struggles with his faith and trust in God. The Shack takes place in the state of Oregon. Mack is the main character of the novel and is faced with a horrifying situation when his daughter Missy is kidnapped and killed by a serial killer. Before this incident, Mack was always considered a pretty religious man. Once his daughter was murdered, Mack’s faith began to deteriorate and he became furious with God. Mack returned to the shack after he found a note in his mailbox that advised him to visit the shack. Mack’s wife Nan did not know about this because she was away with the kids for the weekend. “Papa” is God, Jesus has the same name, and the Holy Spirit is “Sarayu.” These three aid Mack in gaining his faith and love back. They perform a number of activities with Mack to heal him and help ease his pain and suffering.They even let Mack see his daughter again which brings joy and happiness to Mack’s aching heart. Mack has a very difficult time trying to understand why God would let his baby girl be murdered. Mack learns that God has no control over human actions, but helps these actions end in the most loving and caring way possible. Mack learns that God loves all people the same and does not punish anyone for their wrongdoings, but hopes that these people find the love and mercy of God. Once Mack’s time with God is over, he gets in a terrible car accident on the way home. He wakes up in the hospital to his wife, kids, and best friend Willie. His best friend Willie immediately asks Mack if he saw God, and Mack explains everything in great detail and excitement. The detail and words that Mack uses to describe heaven and God are so powerful that is causes Willie to cry. Mack also tells his wife about his life changing
