A wedding planner’s most important duty is to satisfy the needs of the couple who is engaged to be married. Thus, the task of a wedding planner will change for each project, because each wedding is unique. Yet, there are certain duties that wedding planners are expected to perform, that remain constant throughout each project, in order for them to be successful. These duties include hiring and communicating with vendors, reviewing the couple’s budget, helping to choose apparel, assisting in decorating to create a unified look, solving problems, and providing assistance on the day of the ceremony. Thus, I was alive for all of my parents’ family and friends’ weddings, most of which I attended. Between the ages of 4 and 12, I attended over ten weddings, was a flower girl in three weddings, and a “junior” bridesmaid in one wedding. My constant involvement in weddings ignited my love for everything that encompasses a wedding. Since the age of 13 I have had my full wedding planned out in my mind - from the guest list to the color scheme. Trends (and my maturity levels) have changed, and my dream wedding is not the same as it was five years ago. Due to these two factors, wedding planners have to set themselves apart from their competition; differentiation by niche, price and specialty service are just three of the many ways planners do this (3 Ways to Set Yourself, 2013). Similar to everything in life, people do not become successful wedding planner’s overnight. Like most professions, people have to work their way up in the wedding planning business. A similar component of every successful wedding planners’ resume is years of prior experience in the field (Stadlen, 2014). Contrastingly, unlike most professions, there are no requirements or regulations for certification in order to become a successful wedding planner (Womens Toolbox, 2011). In fact, some of the best wedding planners in the United States do not have a degree in anything even related to event planning (Stadlen, 2014).
