The article What to do when a loved one dies was written with the purpose of informing the reader on what they should do when a loved one dies along with different suggestions that make the difficult situation less difficult. The article provides a checklist with all the responsibilities that one might be left in charge of, the checklist is essentially divided into 2 sub categories, what to do immediately after your loved has died and what to do right before the funeral. Additionally, the author discusses that while a funeral is very important it is not the end all be all and by no means must be perfect, which is an important statement because as stated in the book sometimes the overwhelming thought of planning a perfect funeral rids the grieving person of the opportunity to properly grieve with family and friends (Abrams, 2013, p.24). Abrams (2013) also writes about how our mourning becomes different after the first year, in the two chapters in which Abrams (2013) discuses mourning she stresses that mourning takes time and that everyone is different and therefore mourns differently. The book by Abrams is a useful resource for my topic because it is one of the few books that I found that focuses specifically on the different issues that arise from the loss of a parent. Additionally, the article analyzes the reasons why a person who loses a parent is at a higher risk to develop a mental illness and evaluates why it is expected that certain variables have more of an impact on those who are paternally bereaved (Koblenz, 2016). The four variables that Koblenz (2016) studied for his experiment were background characteristics, therapy methods, support from remaining parent and the support system that the individual has. The reason that these four variables were chosen is because much of the data conducted showed a correlation between how the individual was coping with the loss of a parent and which of the variables if any were being conducted. Overall, the information presented in the article by Koblenz (2016) presents qualitative and quantitative data that suggest that age does that contribute to grieving with better ease, in fact the data compiled by Koblenz (2016) indicates that regardless of age, losing a parent will cause some type of emotional pain especially if the individual does not have one of the four variables to help them cope. This article applies to my topic because it discusses how suffering the loss of a parent can affect an individual’s mental wellbeing.
