The 14th amendment in 1868 made it clear that anyone born or naturalized here is a citizen and has to live by the laws and can expect to be protected by the USA
Plessy v Ferguson
1896 Supreme Court Ruling that said separate facilities for black people were legal as long as they were the same as the white peoples. Plessy was a black man who sat in a whites only railroad car & was arrested. This idea was used for many things for the next century
Brown v Board of Education
1954 Supreme Court said that separate but equal idea was illegal and that black people could attend white schools. This was the beginning of desegragation
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Amendment that banned discrimination in almost every way, race, sex,religion or national origin. The US should protect its citizens regardless of race or national origin
