What is the function of a fuse? |
A fuse is positioned in an electrical circuit so that if circuit overloading or short-circuiting occurs the fuse will melt and break the circuit before any damage is done. Ensure the correct amperage fuse is used as a replacement. |

What is the testing procedure for the 30, 80, 150, 400 and 800 amp fuses? |
Before testing a fuse ensure the globe illuminates by using the light switch. With the switch in the OFF position place the fuse to be tested across the fuse test terminals. If the light illuminates the fuse is in good condition. To ensure your safety, before removing a fuse for testing or any other reason the diesel engine must be shut down for at least 30 seconds. Care must be taken when removing or testing for uses to prevent arcing at the terminals.
30 amp fuse - Y class only - Can be repaired by driver if blown 80 amp battery field fuse - Y class only - Shut down Loco - Open battery knife switch - Wait 30 seconds for residual current to dissipate - Throttle in idle - Generate a field switch OFF - Reverser removed - Test fuse and replace 150 amp fuses - Y class only - Shut down Loco - Open battery knife switch - Wait 30 seconds for residual current to dissipate - remove 30 amp fuse - Remove 150 amp fuse - Test fuse and replace as per procedure - Replace the 150 amp fuse - Replace the 30 amp fuse - Observe battery charging ammeter after restarting engine 400 or 800 amp starting fuses - Shut down Loco - Open battery knife switch - Wait 30 seconds for residual current to dissipate - can be removed if the start button is not being pressed - Test the fuse and replace it |

How is a circuit breaker reset? |
To reset the circuit breaker, move it fully to the OFF (lowered) position then to the ON (raised) position. |

What does the Local control circuit breaker do? |
Provides control voltage supply from the auxiliary alternator to heavy duty switchgear and other local control devices. If tripped or placed to off the engine will shut down. |

What does the TPWS, VC, and data log circuit breaker do? |
This circuit breaker provides current to the VC timing, lights, audible warnings and also the emergency call functions. The penalty brake will still apply if the circuit breaker is tripped and will ensure that a loss of the VC system will also open the penalty brake valve. |

It must be up and sealed. Isolate only when advised by maintenance personnel. It will isolate the dynamic brake functions on that loco. The circuit breaker will isolate just the dynamic handle in that cab. |
