1)When you see two or more of the following:
Delusions Hallucinations Disorganized speech Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior Negative symptoms (flat affect, alogia) 2)Significant dysfunction in daily activities including occupational, interpersonal and/or self-care 3) Not accounted for by any other disorder/ medical condition 4) Causes significant distress |

The 5 subtypes of schizophrenia
|
-Disorganized – characterized by confusion, incoherence, and flat or inappropriate affect (may consider them eccentric)
-Catatonic – characterized by psychomotor disturbance of some sort -Paranoid – characterized by an organized system of delusions and auditory hallucinations -Undifferentiated – characterized by symptoms which fit no subtype; vague category -Residual – characterized by symptoms which have lessened in strength and number; person may continue to display blunted or inappropriate emotions |

How to treat Schizophrenia?

Thorazine (commonly used if symptoms are severe)
conventional anti psychotic drugs (produce unwanted movements) new antipsychotic drugs (Clorazil, Zeldox) drugs produce the maximum level of improvement within the first six months of treatment |
